a. Lerionka

Lerionka has formed his own identity and express what he want. It is true that people get their identity when they are born. Lerionka is a born as a Maasai but as a typical Maasai that follow the traditional ways of life or a modern one. The modernity reveal through Lerionka‟s characteristic responsible. He is responsible for forming his identity. The school became my home, and i became a part of it. Even though i knew that i acted against my father‟s instructions, i was quite sure that i would please him in the future if i went home educated. I was sure too that if i finished school, got a job and with my salary bought two cows, my father would not refuse to put them into his herd because they were bought with the money acquired through education p. 129. Lerionka‟s reason for being educated was to please his father. After completing his education, he would find a well paid job. And with his salary he would be able to buy cows for his father. His father can not refuse the cows because the money to buy the cows came from acquiring education. He is responsible for his action by getting educated and supplying his family daily needs. The modernity reveal through Lerionka is that he has form his identity as a Maasai who is educated but still remembers the Maasai tradition and customs. Lerionka is also responsible for his action being educated.

b. Kariankei

Kariankei‟s identity is a typical Maasai warrior, he is very proud of being a Maasai warrior. As a Maasai warrior Kariankei is feared by many tribes. The modernity revealed through Kariankei‟s characteristic proud, he‟s identity is a proud Maasai warrior. Though his identity as a Maasai warrior is being threathen by the Europeans. „the Europeans will never come back and conquer this country‟p.150. It is Kariankei‟s hope that the white man doesn‟t come back and conquer this country. After he witness the changes brought to the village by his sons achievement, he believed that his identity as a Maasai warrior was not threathen. Before colonialization the Maasai were a strong and proud society they believed in the traditional way of life brought by their Forefathers. When they were colonized their way of life is being threathen by the European. The European claim that the Maasai traditional way of life was uncivilized so they introduced schools to teach the Maasai the modern way. After a long struggle to gain freedom, the European left and the Maasai can finally live in peace.

c. Livingstone

Livingstone has a similar characteristic as Lerionka, he choose to be teacher then he later became an activist. Livingstone‟s identity as a Maasai who is educated and he expresses by helping Lerionka get back to school . Through his characteristic trustworthy revealing the modernity of identity and self expression. „ I concluded in my heart, and said aloud,‟Do you think it is possible for me to go to school now?” „Ah Why not?‟ he laughed. „Well, the only school i know is that at Narok where i first went. If i go there i will annoy my father, who has already sent me away from there.‟ „yes, I can understand that. What if you continue your journey to Arusha and then i will tell you a person who will help you to go to school?‟ „I would like that.‟ I felt very happy p. 87-88. In the above quotation Livingstone was offering Lerionka the chance to go back to school. He has friends who could help Lerionka go back to school. and
