Though many people thinks he has lost his mind including his mother. The rise of individual and freedom is that he is free to choose his own path and makes his own choice. Rise of individualism and freedom appear when the European came, before the Maasai followed the traditional way and they did not question its ways. When the European introduce school many Maasai reject it because they though that it teaches their children to defy the elders order. 4. Self Expression and Identity

The move from traditional societies to modern ones was also supposingly allows people‟s ability to form their identities and express these the way people want to. So ba sically people‟s identity depend on their birth. Before colonization people weren‟t about to express themselves because they were bound to strict traditional rule and also weren‟t able to find their own identitiy. After colonization that is the move from traditional societies to modern ones people are able to form their own identites and express what they want.

a. Lerionka

Lerionka has formed his own identity and express what he want. It is true that people get their identity when they are born. Lerionka is a born as a Maasai but as a typical Maasai that follow the traditional ways of life or a modern one. The modernity reveal through Lerionka‟s characteristic responsible. He is responsible for forming his identity. The school became my home, and i became a part of it. Even though i knew that i acted against my father‟s instructions, i was quite sure that i would please him in the future if i went home educated. I was sure too that if i finished school, got a job and with my salary bought two cows, my father would not refuse to put them into his herd because they were bought with the money acquired through education p. 129. Lerionka‟s reason for being educated was to please his father. After completing his education, he would find a well paid job. And with his salary he would be able to buy cows for his father. His father can not refuse the cows because the money to buy the cows came from acquiring education. He is responsible for his action by getting educated and supplying his family daily needs. The modernity reveal through Lerionka is that he has form his identity as a Maasai who is educated but still remembers the Maasai tradition and customs. Lerionka is also responsible for his action being educated.

b. Kariankei

Kariankei‟s identity is a typical Maasai warrior, he is very proud of being a Maasai warrior. As a Maasai warrior Kariankei is feared by many tribes. The modernity revealed through Kariankei‟s characteristic proud, he‟s identity is a
