Trustworthy Patience Livingstone Lerionka
shown he cares. The decision made by his father on sending him to Arusha, he did not fight back but he accepted with heavy heart because he cares and does not
want to fight with him. In the novel, Lerionka has decided to go to school for it is the right
choice. He heard from the meeting that the Government will sell all their cattle and arrest the father‟s of the children and send them to them to dig roads if they
do not let the children go to school. He did not, but he has to, otherwise they will take him to an unknown
place and sell our cattle, and then they will take me to school in his absence. This will leave you with great trouble. I do not want that,
mother. I had better go and leave you in peace. I promise you that i will not forget you p. 16.
Even though Lerionka does not want to go to school, he has no choice but to go. He does not want to see his father and mother suffer. Though he is still
a boy, but he can think like an adult and make rational decision for the safety of his family.
The second evidence is shown when Lerionka returned to his family from school. His father decided to send Lerionka to Arusha to his brother in law instead
of school. Upon hearing this Lerionka was dissappointed with the decision made by his father. He was beginning to like school, asked about the father‟s decision
Lerionka could not answer but he accepted his father‟s decision. My roots were there. Freedom from there, fleeing to a safer, gentler
world, did not come to my mind. I felt that i was to go there to please my father. But it did not matter how far away i went i thought, i would
always go back to that dear land where i was born p. 39.
The reason he accep ted his father‟s decision was not to anger him. For he
does not want to fight with his father. He had to go even though he does not want to. Lerionka though that Arusha is far away from his homeland, he will miss it.
