This chapter presents the conclusion of the study. It also presents the suggestions for the further research on the novella as well as suggestions for
teaching – learning activities.
A. Conclusion
After analyzing the novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption two conclusions are drawn. The first problem deals with the main character’s,
Andy Dufresne, characterization. I discover that Andy is thirty three years old when he comes to Shawshank. He is a good looking person. Andy is a persuasive
person. Andy is a calm person. Andy is an optimistic person. He is not a type of a person who gives up easily and believes that what he is doing is right. Andy is
persistent. He always finishes his work on time and perfect. Andy is an introvert person. He only talks when it is important and needed. Andy is a tough person.
Eventhough he looks weak, he always fights back when he gets harmed. Andy is a type of an independent person. He tries to solve his problem without any help
from the others. Andy is a crafty person. He is able to change a rock into a beautiful statue. He is manipulative person. Andy is able to use the power of
money to run the prison library and the financial matter in the Shawshank. The second problem deals with Andy reacts for being unfairly treated. In
the novella Andy gets difficulty since the beginning of the story. The first is when he undergoes his court session. In this instance, Andy takes his own defence.
In the prison, Andy has also struggle to live. He gets trouble from “the sister’s”, a group of prisoners who have homosexual manners. Andy becomes the
great target to become their ‘prey’. Andy severally gets ambushed by “the sister’s”. He always gets bruised and the worst is broken bone after the fight.
Finally, “the sister’s” are suspicious toward Andy because he always fights back when he gets ambushed. Next is the wardens, guards in the prison. In one
occasion, Andy is nearly killed by the wardens. It is in the roof when Andy and some prisoners are spreading tar on the top. He hears that one of the wardens is
talking about his monetary dilemma. Andy dares himself to talk to the warden that he might be able to help to solve the problem. The warden is not believe in
Andy’s recommendation. Andy is almost shot and thrown down head first by the warden. But Andy keeps clearing up how he can help him with his financial
ability. Finally, the warden believes in Andy suggestion. The last is Andy’s struggle in attempting to jailbreak. Andy has to discover the building first using
the blue print of the penitentiary. He uses the rock – hammer to make a hole in his cell little by little. It needs twenty seven years to get away from Shawshank. First
he makes the hole neatly and slowly. After the hole is big enough, he makes the hole in the pipe behind the wall of his cell. Then he crawls through the narrow
pipe which is dark and full of dung and disgusting creatures. Finally, he gets out from the pipe in the outside of the Shawshank, changes his suit, drives a car
heading to pacific.
