Method and Design of the Research

From the calculation using “ANATEST”, the reliability score that the writer get is 0.73. It means the test is reliable and categorized into high reliability.

3. Discriminating Power

The discriminating power of a test item is the ability of test item to discriminate between students with high and low achievement. 11 the formula used to analyze discriminating power: ⁄ D = Discriminating Power R U = Number of pupils in the upper group who got the item right R L = Number of pupils in the lower group who got the item right T = Number of pupils included in the item analysis. The scale of the discriminating power: 12 DP = = Used DP = = Revised DP = = Discarded However, the writer used “ANATEST” to analyze the discriminating power of test item used in this study.

4. Item Difficulty

According to Arikunto, item difficulty is to identify whether a test item is categorized into difficult or easy in a test. The formula used to find out difficulty index as follow: 13 Explanation: P = Item Difficulty B = The Number of Pupil who got the item right JS = The total number of pupil who tried the item 11 Ibid., p. 211. 12 J. B. Heaton, Classroom Testing, New York: Longman Inc, 1990, p. 174. 13 Arikunto, op cit., p. 208 Classification of difficulty index: 0.00 – 0.15 = Very difficult 0.15 – 0.30 = Difficult 0.31 – 0.70 = Moderate 0.71 – 0.85 = Easy 0.86 – 1.00 = Very easy However, the writer used “ANATEST” to identify whether the test items are categorized into difficult or easy in a test used in this study .

E. Instrument of the Research

In this research, the instrument was test. It is to measure studen ts’ reading comprehension skill. It administered twice: pre-test and post-test. Pre-test was done before the treatment was given to students. Pre-test consisted of 25 multiple choice questions. Post-test was given after the treatments; the purpose was to see whether or not there wa s any progress in students’ reading comprehension after receiving the treatment. Post-test also consisted of 25 multiple choice questions. The questions were got from several books of English for the tenth grade.

F. Technique of Data Collection

To know the effectiveness of story mapping technique in this research, the writer used three techniques to get valid data and objective information, as follows:

1. Test

Test is main instrument in this research. The test technique was used to see the result of students’ improvement in their reading comprehension of narrative text. The test was applied in experimental and control class to find out students’ achievement. The score of the test used as comparison between experimental and control class. The writer conducted the test two times for both classes. The first was pre-test and the second was post-test. After knowing and getting the data, the writer annalyzed the data to see the effectiveness of story mapping on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text.
