a. Questionnaire
In answering the research questions, the researcher used a questionnaire. A questionnaire is an instrument in the form of questions or statements. It is
distributed to the participants of a certain study in order to obtain the participants’ responses. It is usually in written responses Ary, Jacobs and Sorensen, 2002:
566. The questionnaire distributed to the participants was in the form of the degree level of statements. The questionnaire made contained some features. They
were the implementation of blogs, impact of blogs in students’ writing, students’ personal evaluation, the advantages of blogs and also students’ problems and
suggestions in the use of blogs in Basic writing class. The questionnaire used was designed in the type of closed-ended and open-
ended forms. In a closed-ended form, the participants chose the options based on the statements given. The common format used in the closed-ended form of a
questionnaire related to the attitude scale in survey method is the Likert Scale. There are number of points which provide ordinal scale measurement in this
Likert Scale. In this research, the participants could select the options which represented points on the scale. The points are usually determined by using
numerical values from one to four or zero to three. For instance, the points in this research were valued from strongly disagree, disagree, agree and strongly agree
Wiersma, 1995: 182. On the other hand, in the open-ended form, the questions given provided the opportunities for the participants to share and express their
feelings and opinions freely without options provided towards the use of blogs in Basic Writing class
. Hence, both of the closed-ended and open-ended forms of the
23 questionnaire given aimed to discover participants’ perception on the use of blogs
in Basic Writing class.
b. Interview Protocol
In conducting this research, the researcher also used interview as one of the instruments. The interview used was a semi structured interview. The researcher
conducted a face-to-face interview with the chosen participants Ary, Jacobs, and Sorensen, 2010: 380. “The semi structured interview involves asking a series of
structured questions and then probing more deeply with open-form questions to obtain additional information” Gall Borg, 2007: 46. The interview was
conducted because it was the continuation of questionnaire distributed by the researcher. The purpose was to obtain additional information which would support
the results of this study. In this interview session, the researcher merely chose four respondents in each class. The selection of participants was conducted based on
the consideration that these participants in the process of answering the questionnaire gave the answers which caused the researcher need to investigate
the information further related to this study.
