Struggle The Meanings of Love to Her Dying Daughter for Sara

3. Struggle

As a masochistic mother, Sara will do everything for her beloved one. One is willing to undergo pain for the sake of her child without expecting in return Deutsch 19. No matter how hard it is, Sara has a goal to pursue the happiness and the better life for her dying daughter. For Sara, love can mean a struggle. She will not let her beloved daughter suffer from the pain by herself. To save Kate, Sara struggles to get a bodily organ donor for her daughter and to fight against another daughter in the trial. Beside that, Sara also struggles for the happiness of her beloved daughter. Her struggle begins when knowing that Jesse, her son, is not a match donor for Kate who is diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia and needs bone marrow transplant. Because getting a transplant from unrelated donor is more dangerous than relative donor, Sara decides to have a baby who will be a potential donor to save Kate Picoult 84-85. Then, she struggles to conceive Anna by going to a geneticist and pick the embryo that would be a perfect genetic match Picoult 25. Her effort to conceive Anna with a perfect genetic match with Kate shows us her struggle to get a bodily organ donor. Her biggest struggle happens when Kate needs a kidney from her sister. To get the kidney, Sara needs to battle against another daughter. She gets a petition for medical emancipation from Anna. She is sued by Anna who wants to get her own rights and to live without enduring her sister’s illness. Because Sara loves Kate very much, she keeps struggling to have Anna give Kate her kidney. Thus, she decides to be an attorney again and represents Kate’s party in the court Picoult 98. It is obviously proved that being an attorney is part of her struggle to fight against another daughter. Next, Sara also struggles to convince her husband that she is the one who is capable to give a decision for Anna to donate her kidney. Sara’s decision to be a lawyer leads to the conflict with Brian, her husband. He suggests Sara to hire a real lawyer but she refuses. Sara convinces her husband that she is capable to give a decision for Anna’s life better than other lawyers. She can explain the consequences if Anna stops being a donor for her sister Picoult 219-220. From this proof, we know Sara’s struggle to provide Kate a kidney. Sara has to convince Brian how capable she is for representing her party. Sara also portrays her love through the hardness of her struggles. To save Kate, Sara has to confront in two sides, Kate’s and Anna’s. One side, Sara makes a great effort to survive Kate from her illness. The other side, she has to battle another daughter. Even though it is not easy for Sara to fight against her own daughter, she insists on finishing the problems. Brian’s speech proves how hard Sara’s struggle is. “Look, with all due respect, this may seem like an incredibly big deal, and it is, but we have another incredibly big deal going on at the same time. Our older daughter’s been hospitalized and . . . well, Sara’s fighting in two fronts” Picoult 266. On one occasion, Sara begs Anna to withdraw her lawsuit. Although her demand leads to the conflict with Anna, Sara does not surrender to beg her daughter donating her kidney. She discusses about the lawsuit with Anna and ensures her that they can solve the problem without a judge Picoult 216. In her struggle, Sara also tries to make a deal. She goes to Alexander’s office to offer a deal. Sara begs Anna to donate her kidney and promises that she will not ask Anna again for the future medical procedures to prolong Kate’s life. My mother sits down. “I know. I was . . . well, I’m hopping that we can clear this up. I want us to make a decision, together”. Campbell raps his fingers on the table. “Are you offering us a deal?” He makes it sound so businesslike. My mother blinks at him. “Yes, I guess I am.” She turns her chair toward me, as if only the two of us are in the room. “Anna, I know how much you’ve done for Kate. I also know she doesn’t have many chances left . . . but she might have this one.” . . . “If the cancer comes back, if this kidney transplant doesn’t work, if this don’t wind up the way we all wish they would for Kate – well, I will never ask you to help your sister again . . . but Anna, will you do this one last thing?” Picoult 329. Another evidence that shows how Sara struggles can be seen when she involves arsenic therapy for Kate. She has to debate with her husband because he does not agree with Sara’s effort to have Kate follow the arsenic therapy. Brian thinks that Kate has no more chance to live longer. Precisely, Sara wants her to undergo Arsenic therapy at the hospital even tough it does not cure and just postpones what is coming Picoult 316-318. She is always optimistic that there are ways to keep her dying daughter alive. “. . . I was sure Kate was going to die. But Sara, she didn’t give up on Kate and she came back fighting” Picoult 412. Brian’s speech shows that Sara does not surrender in the situation when there is no hope to keep Kate alive. Sara comes back fighting by involving the arsenic therapy to her dying daughter. Besides that, Sara also struggles for the happiness of her dying daughter. She wants to sew a prom dress in a short time. Because Kate does not find a gown that covers the Hickman catheter in the center of her chest, Sara offers herself to sew a prom dress and has her daughter design the one she wants. Even she has no skill in sewing, Sara tells that she will learn how to sew in the very little time Picoult 380. Her willingness to learn and to sew in a very little time shows her struggle. She will work out for the happiness of her dying daughter in her first date with her beloved boyfriend.
