1. Research and information gathering

In this stage the researcher conducted research and information gathering such as review of related literature, interviewed the tenth grade English teacher of SMA Pangudi luhur Yogyakarta, and distributed questionnaire to tenth grade students of SMA Pangudi luhur Yogyakarta. Review of related literature was conducted to collect some useful information relating to the topic of this study, which was designing supplementary speaking materials using experiential learning. The researcher collected information about instructional design, School-Based Curriculum 2006, experiential learning, and speaking theory. Therefore, reading some books, articles, and journals was a very significant activity in this study. The interview was conducted in order to gather information about the character of the students, the difficulties found in teaching speaking, teaching strategies used by the teacher, and the existing teaching material that was used in SMA Pangudi luhur Yogyakarta . While the questionnaire was distributed in order to gather the information about students’ perception on speaking, the difficulties faced by the students in learning speaking, the expected media used in speaking class and topics that the students wanted to learn.

2. Planning

After the researcher obtained all the information, the next step was planning. In this stage the researcher conducted some activities such as defining skills, stating objectives, and determining course sequence Borg Gall, 1983: 775. The main role of this stage was to prepare everything such as topics of materials, syllabuses, lesson plan and many others that were needed in designing the preliminary product. 39

3. Design the preliminary product

In this stage, the researcher started to develop the materials. All of the information research and information gathering was interpreted. The purpose of designing the preliminary product was to propose the designed materials.
