B. Goals, Topics, and General Purposes

Based on the results of research and information collecting, the goal, topics, and general purposes of the designed materials were formulated. This step was based on the second step of Research and Development R D. The goals of the learning were formulated from the curriculum area: School-Based Curriculum 2006. The goals of the learning were equivalent with the competence standard in School-Based Curriculum 2006. Thus, the goals of the learning were to express the meaning in formal and informal transactional and interpersonal in daily life context; to express meaning in short functional texts, in forms of recount, procedure, narrative, descriptive and news item in daily life context and to express meaning in a short functional written text in daily life context. Based on the Kemp’s Instructional design, the topics were taken from the goals while in School-Based Curriculum 2006; the topics were taken from the basic competence. In this study, the topics were taken from the School-Based Curriculum 2006 and the English syllabus of SMA Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta. Therefore, the materials had the same topics as which were in the syllabus. There were eight units with some topics elaborated in this designed materials. The units and the topics were presented in the table as follows. General purposes were what the students generally expected to learn as the result of instruction. The general purposes of the whole units in the designed materials were equivalent with the basic competencies in the School-Based Curriculum 2006 and the syllabus of SMA Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta . The basic competencies were the knowledge, skills and attitudes that had to be mastered by the students in mastering course material given in class at a certain level of education. The following table presented the basic competencies of the whole units.
