7.1 Criteria for target and indicator selection

Criteria 1: Targets that have strong linkages to the so ioe o o i de elop e t age da of lea i g o o e ehi d a d dig it fo all – targets must ensure that everyone benefit from minimum environmental, social and economic safeguards including poverty eradication and access to sustainable livelihoods, basic services and a clean and healthy environment Criteria 2: Targets that increa se p ospe it a d e uit hile sta i g ithi the ea th s safe ope ati g spa e , that decouple socioeconomic development from depletion of resources and irreversible changes in the global environment, and that are respectful of both ecological and social life supporting systems e.g. solutions through resource efficiency, inclusive greening economies, sustainable consumption, sustainable production, equitable access to natural resources, justice and rule of law Criteria 3: Targets that promote investment in the natural, human and social, and built-capital to eate the spa e a d esilie e to a hie e sustai a le de elop e t, thus eeti g the needs of current generations, and ensuring intergenerational equity e.g. through ecological restoration, investing in indigenous knowledge and education for sustainable development, enhancing innovation, access to information, and resilience to social, economic and environmental shocks and disasters Criteria 4: Targets that take into account current commitments such as internationally agreed global environmental goals and targets, and use current goals and targets as the g ou d floo fo e goals a d targets to avoid regression; andor incorporate those that are showing slow progress Criteria 5: Targets that are scientifically credible and verifiable and should be based on the best scientific understanding and supported by the scientific community Criteria 6: Progress on the targets must be trackable and should be backed up by specific and measurable targets and indicators, or their measurement should be feasible in the future.
