Veronika’s Decision in Her Life

47 a central position in Veronika’s social learning processes. It served basis feelings of satisfaction and worth within Veronika. Ultimately, she can put a new conception in her life when she went out from Villete along with Eduard. Veronika could explore more about her new conception about jokes about Virgin Mary. “ The Virgin never took any notice of the others might think of her. Imagine having to explain to everyone that business of the Holy Ghost. She didn’t explain anything, she just said:” That’s what happened.” And do you know what the others must have said?” Of course. That she was insane.” 202 Above quotation implies a message that a person has their own choice without being forced of anything. Veronika illustrated that as Virgin Mary, who won’t explain to everyone that business of the Holy Ghost. It has one similar point to her decision without being forced by the doctor about her died. She wanted to enjoy her days which remain, freely express her own feeling toward Eduard. All of this social learning has been undergone by Veronika in Villete. She is learning from the initial until the final level which enable her to have new perception how to undergone her life.

2. Veronika’s Decision in Her Life

How Veronika gets into her decision is after her social learning, but in order to make it clear this study applies theory of decision making in complex social environment. Boyd and Richerson, their theories have investigated social learning, which often strongly influences people’s decisions. It has been through several processes from finding the problem, determining requirements, PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 48 establishing goals, identify alternatives, and last step is decide. Veronika tries to commit suicide due to two main reasons. The first reason: Everything in her life was the same and once her youth was gone, it would be downhill all the way, with an old age beginning to leave irreversible marks, the onset of illness, the departure of friends. She would gain nothing by continuing to live; indeed, the like hood of suffering would only increase. The second reason was more philosophical: Veronika read the newspapers, watched TV, and she was aware of what was going on in the world. Everything was wrong, and she had no way of putting things right-that gave her a sense of complete powerlessness. 7 Above quotations have become basic conceptions which finally lead her to commit suicide. By living in mental she is introduced with the word insanity. A new conception she has never known before. She starts to understand what is mean of being insane. She had found her truly problem in her life which finally leads her to commit suicide. She had never allowed herself to be crazy in order to be wise. In relation with goals, Veronika had established her goals. “She knew she was going to die soon, why be afraid? It wouldn’t help at all, it wouldn’t prevent the fatal heart attack; the best plan would be to enjoy the days and hours that remained, doing things she had never before “102. This quotation started to explain that Veronika establish her goal enjoying her the days and hours that remained like what the doctor had said to her. Veronika starts to indentify alternatives as deciding process through social learning. Being characterized as a stubborn person provides the first alternative. The first alternative is that she wanted to continue committing suicide. She had taught herself to give men a precise moment of pleasure; never more, never less, only was what necessary. She didn’t get angry with PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 49 anyone, because that would mean having to react, having to do battle with the enemy…. When she had achieved almost everything she wanted in life, she had reached the conclusion that her existence had no meaning, because every day was the same. And she had decided to die. 44-45 Being characterized as an obedient person and introduced about insanity, she find the way how to express herself without being forced or anything. She tries to comprehend the sense of life which was told by Zedka. “Do you remember when we first met? I told you a story try to explain that the world is exactly as we see it. Everyone thought the king as mad, because he wanted to impose an order that no longer existed in the minds of his subject” 161. Again through social learning, Veronika is reinforced choosing the alternatives which are presented in front of her. She is put in two choices, first is just try to continue her suicide attempt and try to see her life in different ways. Having the self-evaluation and self-concept, Veronika is enabled to compare her experience followed by her goals in life. Through social learning, she could get her goals, full of peace and happiness due to her freedom of expressing and choosing what she wanted to do. Her action is seen in the last part of the novel when she went out accompany by Eduard. “ I don’t know if its’s too early or too late, but, just, as you did with me, I want to tell you that I love you. You don’t have to believe it, may be it’s just foolishness, a fantasy of mine” 204. Ultimately, above quotation shows that Veronika decided to see her life differently, like what she had been done in Villete. Veronika tries to say that she loves Eduard, even she is a schizophrenic. She expressed her feeling without being afraid or forced by somebody. It means that she could do everything she PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 50 wants to do in order to enjoy her life without being forced or hurting somebody. She starts to know how to manage her life. All those processes show that social learning leads her into a decision. Her decision which finally makes her knows what to do in her life. This analysis figures out a conclusion that Veronika knows what to do in her life is through social learning. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 51

CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter is divided into two parts. They are conclusion and suggestion. The conclusion concludes all answers of the problem formulation which is mentioned in the first chapter of this study. The suggestions cover proposition for future researchers and the implementation of Veronika Decides to Die in Intensive Reading II.

A. Conclusions

As the first conclusion, Veronika is defined as a dynamic character. Specifically, there are ten characteristics of Veronika based on Murphy’s theory which concludes Veronika’s changing character before and after social learning. Veronika is seen to be an aggressive person before she does social learning. Her aggressiveness also creates cussedness. That’s why Veronika is also depicted as stubborn person. Veronika is depicted to be a thoughtful person. She is shown to take a little time thinking and pondering about what to do and neither is not to do.
