Conclusions CONCLUSIONS, IMPLICATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

92 The general procedures for teaching Basic Reading II using this novel are as follows: 1. The teacher selects a material from the novel Ugly. The material consists of 16 pages, taken from chapter 5 page 66-79 of Ugly. 2. To build student’s background knowledge, the teacher conducts a brainstorming on the topic, child abuse. 3. From the brainstorming, the teacher leads the students to categorize abuse into 3 categories physical abuse, psychological abuse and sexual abuse. 4. Students are then divided into three groups; each group discussing and defining one category of abuse. Then they would present their conclusions in front of the class. 5. The teacher then distributes the material from the novel as well as the questions for the reading passage to the students. 6. Students read the material individually then answer the questions. 7. Teacher discusses the questions with the class. 8. For the post reading activity, the teacher invites the students to share their opinion about what they will do if they were Clare’s teacher.

C. Suggestions

This part offers future researchers who are interested in studying the novel Ugly some research suggestions for the analysis of the novel. 93 Despite the fact that many aspects of the novel have been analyzed by researchers due to this novel’s popularity, it seems some parts remain untouched. The first suggested topic for studying this novel would be to study Clare’s relationship with her other siblings. The second topic that can also be analyzed through the novel is the influence of Miss K’s appearance in the development of Clare’s life. The first and the second suggestions can be analyzed by means of the same approach of this study, which is critical approach, especially via psychology approach. The third subject of analysis is a study on the patterns of grammatical mistake in Eastman’s speech. Eastman is portrayed as a fatuous man, so there are lots of grammatical mistakes in his direct speech. By studying his utterances, the researcher can make up the pattern of Eastman’s grammatical problems. The third suggested research subject requires a different approach from the previous ones as because it should be analyzed through a linguistic point of view. 94 REFERENCES Abrams, M.H. 1993.
