1.2 Reasons for Choosing the Topic
Report is one of the text types based on genre of the text. As Hammond 1992:90 states that report is “to provide information about natural and non-natural
phenomena.” And in addition, according to Gerot and Wignell 1994:196, the social function of report is “to describe the way things are, with reference to a
range of natural, man-made and social phenomena in our environment.” Lots of different kinds of people write reports, including the eleventh
grade students of senior high school as stated in KTSP for SMAMA. It is one of the text types students have to master. Unfortunately, it is common that in the
writing process the students are getting confused in building the idea. Therefore, they need something to help them to get the idea and build it more easily.
Teaching media are to help the teacher and students to solve this problem. In this case, the writer has chosen documentary films in BBC VCD as the alternative
teaching media, especially in teaching writing report text. In this case, there are some reasons why the writer chooses the topic:
1 The students’ ability in writing is sometimes unsatisfactory since they
do not know what exactly they are to share and write. 2
Students sometimes get difficulty to distinguish between descriptive text and report text. Thus, through documentary films showed, they
will catch the core of the distinction between descriptive and report texts more easily.
3 Documentary films are to stimulate students’ creativity in building
their idea and constructing a text. Documentary films, contain of
moving pictures and also sounds describing things, are to develop students’ imagination and their ability in constructing idea.
4 Documentary films in BBC VCD usually capture amazing or unique
moments about things in the world. 5
Documentary films in BBC VCD can be easily gotten, adopted, applied and adapted to a variety of setting, give contribution to
improve the quality of teaching learning process, especially in the use of teaching media.
