Abstract
Echinochloa crus-galli is a dominant weed that can decrease rice production. One factor that can determine the decreasing rate
production is population density of weed. The objective of the research was to study the effect of Echinochloa crus-galli population density
on growth and production of rice with replacement series approach. This research was conducted at Green House in Cikabayan
experimental station from April until August 2009. The treatment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Block Design with 3
replications. The factor was rice and Echinochloa crus-galli population density which consist of eleven treatments: monoculture of
1,2,3and 4 weeds/pot, monoculture of 1,2,3and 4 rice/pot,and in mixture (1:3, 2:2, 3:1 plants/pot). The result showed that the lower dry
weight of biomass of rice was obtained at a density of 4 plants/pot (4.79 g/plant). In the monoculture system, the increase in plant density
inhibited plant height, number of tillers, number of leaf, length of roots. and reduced yield of rice (grain per plant). The increase of E. crusgalli density decreased the dry weight/plant of weed. In mixture, Relative Yield Total (RYT) of three weeds/pot established with one rice/pot
