a. Results of Identifying Learners’ Characteristics

The data of learners’ characteristics were obtained through questionnaire randomly distributed to forty students of the XI grade. The results of the questionnaires indicated that students’ motivation in learning was high. 67.5 or 27 from 40 respondents stated their enjoyment of studying in SMA Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta. They liked studying in SMA Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta because the school was very discipline and well facilitated. Then, most respondents 97.5 agreed that vocabulary was important. It was because vocabulary was the basis and key to learn English. However, most of them 75 had not mastered a lot of vocabulary. In addition, they were not accustomed to look-up dictionary in their reading and writing. In their reading, 12 or 30 respondents mentioned that they rarely opened dictionary and 22 or 55 respondents seldom opened dictionary. Then, the rest mentioned that they not often 2.5 , often 5 , and very often 7.5 opened dictionary to support their reading. In writing, most respondents mentioned that they seldom 47.5 opened a dictionary while the other mentioned that they rarely 27.5 , not often 12.5 , and often 12.5 opened a dictionary. Afterwards, many respondents 55 implied that the most effective way to memorize English vocabulary was looking-up the direct translation. Then, 14 or 35 respondents mentioned that they memorized best when using pictures. Only 10 of the total respondents liked to use the words in context. Sixty two point five percent or 25 from 40 respondents agreed that vocabulary mastery could be developed through listening, speaking, reading, and writing while 37.5 respondents agreed that in order to use English well, a lot of English vocabulary needed to be memorized first.
