CHAPTER III INTRINSIC ELEMENTS IN NICHOLAS SPARKS’ MESSAGE IN A
BOTTLE 3.1 Its theme
The theme in this novel is two persons who are looking for true love. In this novel, Theresa looking for a man who will be her husband after divorced. She
meets with Garret through Garret Message which found by Theresa in a beach. The message is amazing because it can touch in heart because of that Theresa
likes it. The entire story in this novel dominant presents about Theresa looking for
a true love. The beginning of the story she finds messages of garret and she wishes to meet with Garret. They meet at Wilmington where Garret lives in. The
ending of the story they separate because Garret is death when He goes to sail on the sea at Wilmington. Theresa makes a message in a bottle and throws to the sea
at Cape Cod where she finds Garret’s message firstly. She hopes Garret will read her message as Garret does before.
3.2 Its Plot
The beginning of the story is at the beach of Cape Cod. Theresa wastes her leave there. In the evening Theresa looks at around the sea, the sun is down and
she goes back to inn but on the way she finds a bottle which contents a message of Garret and reads it.

Theresa is anxious to Garret because she is touched of Garret’s message which is beautiful about love to a woman. She reads the message repeatedly and
thinks that Garret is a good man. Then she publish it in news paper, and so many people response the message and send letter to Theresa because they is interested
in the message but not few of people want to get benefit with be a liar as the writer of the original message because Theresa doesn’t make the name of original
writer in news paper. Theresa connects to a woman who has another message of Garret and asks
to the woman to send the copy of the message. She thinks to search another message in internet and she is success to get it from a Professor. Theresa says to
Deana about her feeling hooked with the messages; Deana knows that Theresa likes to Garret who writes the messages because it’s content about true love and
sincere to Catherine Garret’s wife. Theresa needs a man who loves her after divorced by David her husband.
Theresa wishes to meet with Garret but she doesn’t know where he lives in. Theresa searches in internet and get some information about Garret that he
lives in Wilmington. She makes decision to go to meet Garret in Wilmington even though she never goes there.
The climax of this novel, after she considers all of her planings to go to Wilmington, it can be carryout that she goes to Wilmington. In Wilmington, she
rents a room at hotel; she doesn’t know much about that place also diving as Garret’s job so she buys some map of Wilmington and book of diving at the store
there. After that, she goes to Garret’s store but not meet with him. The worker of

the shop gives information where Garret is working, and Theresa goes to dock base on information from the worker. That place is not far from the shop.
She arrives at the dock but no body found there. There are found ships that takes a rest then suddenly, Garret calls Theresa and they talk one to the other. In
their conversation either Garret or Theresa is intersted in, so Garret asks her to have sail. After make an appoinment, they sails on the sea. Begining of that
moment they are falling in love. The resolution of this novel, Garret thinks she is compatible to him, so no
problem if he expresses his hart wants to be her husband. It can not realize, because Garret thinks it is not time to say. They make a good relationship,
sometime Theresa comes to wilmington to meet with Garret but if she has a leaveday.
One day, Garret goes to boeton to meet Theresa at once want to invite her move to wilmington together with him. In the boston they walk around and enjoy
all activities. When Garret wants to go back to Wilmington, he asks Theresa to live together with him in Wilmington. If it realize that means she must move to
Wilmington, Theresa must lose her job in Boston which rises besides her son gets study near of her living and her son has friends there. Theresa refuses his offer but
other wise she asks Garret to move from Wilmington and live together with her in Boston. Garret refuses her offer because he can not do the job in the city but he
can work just in the sea like diving, sail and so on. They maintains their respective princips so nothing settlement. They clash each other until Garret go back to
Wilmington.

After Garret arrives in Wilmington, he goes to sail on the sea by Happanten his ship. Even though he knows that it’s foul weather he doesn’t care
because he is frustrated after get dispute with Theresa. On the sea, she get trouble to face stiff breeze. It rammes in to his ship so the ship is sink and Garret is death.
3.3 Its Characters 3.3.1 Main Characters
