A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Film is one of media to convey some certain expressions or emotions to the certain enjoyer. With film people who have some opinions or messages about life can convey it to the enjoyer. The people who have sense of art can create film to convey his or her feeling but how about another people who do not have sense of art. They cannot express their own feeling about what they feel. It happens because only the certain people who have sense of art can use a film as a media to convey their own feeling about what they feel. Nowadays’ people who do not have sense of art can create their own film only using his or her hand phone or mini camera. Film encompasses individual motion pictures, the field of film as an art form, and the motion picture industry. Films are produced by recording images from the world with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or special effects. Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating or indoctrinating citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some films have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue. 1 2 Society likes film because it is considered as an entertainment to them, and also as a media to teach their children about life. Usually a film raises certain message or issue to be conveyed to the readers. Usually, a film maker takes certain person to be an actor or actress in his or her film because of that the role of the character on a movie is the important one. The characters that have good talents usually are taken by the film maker to portray some specific roles that are considered as difficult role. The character on the stage who can present neither convincing argument or information as to his past experience, his present behavior or his aspirations, nor give a comprehensive analysis of his motives is as legitimate and as worthy of attention as one who, alarmingly, can do all these things, the more acute the experience the less articulate its expression. 1 On Materials Girls movie, the characters of Ava and Tanzie were presented as the major female characters. These two girls had same characteristic, they liked shopping and going to night club. It was because they had much money to do what they wanted. In the beginning of the movie those two characters were presented as the daughters of Victor Marcetta, Both of them lead the company. When they led the company of cosmetic the staff and secretary of company, named Lukas Hass wanted to sell their company because he wished to monopolize the company. Tanzie had weakness in taking position or decision in leading company. However Ava was an assertive woman in taking decision. 1 Ronald Hayman, Techniques of Acting: United State, 1971. p. 71 3 However her life was full of prestige and naïve because their life was much influenced by modern life style. When a scandal involving one of the companys products turned into an investigation, the girls found their assets frozen and must adjust to live without their fortune. Just when it seemed like things couldnt get any worse, disaster stroke again. When fire burned their home, Ava quickly took all her clothes while Tanzie, carried all her father’s belonging, such as her dads TiVo and some clothes. They were tempted to listen to their advisors and sold the company to their biggest competitor Fabiella for just over 60 million dollars each. While this meant that they could return to the lifestyle that they were accustomed to, nonetheless they decided to honor their fathers memory by trying to turn it around themselves. Finding inspiration in Erin Brockovich, the girls decided to get to the root of the scandal. In the end, the girls successfully managed to clear the Marchetta name and reclaimed the company. Nearly seven months after the scandal began. The girls were seen leading the company, with Ava as the CEO and Tanzie worked as a lab technician. The interesting issue of this movie that the two major women characters, Ava and Tanzie, those two major characters were considered have same characteristic as modern white people. Ava and Tanzie had some characteristics to represent white people in general. In America, the white people identically with night life and glamour, in America we know certain people who have glamour life 4 is called as jet set society, jet set society is recognized as special society, because they only don’t have much money and power but usually they also have influence to their country. Based on this consideration the writer is interested to raise the issue about the glamour society in America who is represented by Ava and Tanzie. Using the theory of representation the writer would like to analyze whether the characters of Ava and Tanzie represent the glamour white people especially in America, finally through those considerations the writer decides to entitle this thesis “An Analysis of the Character of Ava and Tanzie on Materials Girls Movie”.
