v. 98. “Andrea, don’t forget to tell Emily.” 98PImpTaAS
Miranda sometimes uses imperative style to prohibit her subordinate for doing something. She also uses this style when her commands are disobeyed by
the subordinate. During the movie, she utters this style once to gives task assignment to her subordinate. By prohibition-imperative utterances, she does not
allow others to deny her utterances. That conversation happens between Miranda and Andrea. Miranda
instructs Andrea to tell Emily that the assistant who will come to Paris with Miranda is Andrea, not Emily. Miranda gives task assignment as part of Andrea’s
job. She dictates Andrea by saying “don’t forget to tell Emily”. Her command is
must-be-obeyed command. It is direct, bald on record, and detail, meaning to say that her subordinates must understand exactly what Miranda instructs. Hence, this
characteristic shows the autocratic style of her.
vi. 27. “Did Demarchelier confirm?” 27QIntTaAS
When she asks questions, she does it interrogatively. Her question is a must-be-answered-immediately question. In a whole movie, she uses this type and
form of utterance 2 times in giving the task assignment. By saying “Did Demarchelier confirm?” actually Miranda is asking a
question which is unknown for Andrea. She does not give clue about what or who is Demarchelier, but Miranda demands Andrea to gives information about
Demarchelier to her directly. Whereas this is the first time Andrea works in Runway
office and Miranda does not give any information about her instruction.
Her questions are usually direct, bald on record, and check-list questions, meaning to say that she does not ask other’s opinion. Hence, this characteristic shows the
autocratic style of her.
vii. 42. “Where is that piece of paper I had in my hand yesterday morning?”
42RIntTaAS
Sometimes Miranda requests something interrogatively. In a whole movie, she uses this type and form of utterance 4 times in giving the task assignment.
That utterance above happens in Runway fashion magazine in the morning. The utterance “Where is that piece of paper I had in my hand yesterday
morning?” is not only a question, but also request. Here, Miranda dictates Andrea indirectly to find the piece of paper that Mirada had in her hand yesterday
morning. Miranda gives order indirectly and uses off record strategy. This request is must-be-obeyed request. Hence, this characteristic shows the autocratic style of
her.
