autocratic style toward her subordinates. There are 105 data from Miranda’s directive speech acts which show that Miranda uses the autocratic style. This
analyzes can be seen through 4 functions of the major behavior as a leader.
a. Policy Decision
In deciding policies, a leader can be identified hisher leadership style through how heshe uses a language. In Miranda’s case, almost all policy
decisions of her company are taken by herself. From 11 utterances about policy decision, 9 data of them are autocratic style. Some explanations below are
analysis of Miranda’s utterance when she decides rules of her company.
i. 32.
“Where are all the other dresses?” 32QIntPolAS
When she asks questions, she does it interrogatively. Her question is a must-be-answered-immediately question. Miranda’s questions are usually direct,
bald on record, and check-list questions, meaning to say that she does not ask other’s opinion. Hence, this characteristic shows the autocratic style of her. In a
whole movie, she uses question in interrogative form 4 times. The setting happens in Miranda’s room. The participants of the meeting is
only Miranda and several her staff. They are discussing about the dresses which will be used for the shoot. This utterance is coming from Miranda after she
interrupts the idea of her staff. By saying “Where are all the other dresses?” it proves that Miranda wants other dresses. Here, Miranda thinks that a certain idea
from her staff is not useable. She disagrees about the dresses that are chosen by
her staff. Through that utterance, Miranda interrupts her staff without giving any chance for them to think of their ideas. After her staff or her respond to the
question, Miranda immediately asks another question to them. As seen above, her question is to check other’s performance and not to ask opinion.
ii. 79. “And if you don’t have that Harry Potter book by then, dont even
bother coming back.” 79PImpPolAS
Miranda sometimes uses imperative form to prohibit her subordinate for doing something. During the movie, she uses prohibition in imperative form 3
times. Miranda tends to use direct and bald-on record strategy. The setting happens in Miranda’s room. The participants in this
conversation are Miranda and Andrea. In this conversation, Miranda asks Andrea to find out the unpublished Harry Potter manuscript for her daughters. By saying
“And if you don’t have that Harry Potter book by then, dont even bother coming back”, Miranda as the superior gives decision to Andrea not to come back to
Runway Office if Andrea cannot get unpublished Harry Potter manuscript. The
utterance “dont even bother coming back” shows that Miranda prohibits Andrea to come to Runway office, and the utterance “And if you dont have that Harry
Potter book by then” shows that there is a requirement that Andrea must be fulfilled if she still wants to work as an assistant in Runway office. Miranda makes
that requirement by herself because of her higher control over her subordinates. So whatever will be to her subordinates, it depends only on Miranda. Hence, this
characteristic shows the autocratic style of her.
iii. 85. “And this layout for the ‘Winter Wonderland’ spread... Not
wonderful yet.” 89RDecPolAS
When she requests something, she does it declaratively. In this meeting session, Miranda criticizes her staff using sarcasm, without giving detail
explanation. Because Miranda has higher control than her staff, it makes all of the idea is dependent on Miranda. During the movie, she uses this type and form of
utterance 2 times. The conversation takes place in the meeting room chaired by Miranda.
They are discussing issues for the coming publication. In the middle of the meeting, Miranda says “And this layout for the ‘Winter Wonderland’ spread... Not
wonderful yet”, it implies that Miranda does not like the layout for the “Winter Wonderland” and she wants the staff replace it with another one. She says her
willingness to replace the ‘Winter Wonderland’ layout with another one toward her subordinates indirectly by using off-record strategy. However, although she
says it indirectly, her subordinates have known what they must do without Miranda gives some instruction. Miranda makes the decision by herself because
of her control over her subordinates. Hence, this characteristic shows the autocratic style of her.
