Direction by Leader 13. Autocratic Style

Her questions are usually direct, bald on record, and check-list questions, meaning to say that she does not ask other’s opinion. The utterance “Where is that piece of paper I had in my hand yesterday morning?” is not only a question, but also request. Here, Miranda dictates Andrea indirectly to find the piece of paper that Mirada had in her hand yesterday morning. Miranda gives order indirectly and uses off record strategy. This request is must-be-obeyed request. Hence, this characteristic shows the autocratic style of her.

d. Direction by Leader

As any kind of action which is important for a company, direction by leader is action which exists in a company. In giving direction, a leader can be identified hisher leadership style through hisher attitude. Giving direction by leader means that the leader also praises and criticizes the subordinates. In Miranda’s case, all of the direction of her company is taken by herself. From 16 utterances about direction by leader, 15 data of them are autocratic style. Some explanations below are analysis of Miranda’s utterance when she is giving direction to her subordinates.

By saying “who are you?” for the first interview, Miranda’s response to Andrea is very direct in criticizing Andrea. As the leader who interviewing someone who looking for a job, she does not use any device to soften her question such as “What is your name?” or “Can I have your name, please?” Hence, this characteristic shows the autocratic style of her. Andrea does not say that utterance above in negative politeness but she says that in bald on-record. ii. 19. “Is there some reason that my coffee isn’t here? Has she died or something?” 19RIntDirAS That utterance takes place in Runway office. When she requests something, sometimes Miranda does it interrogatively. In giving critic to her subordinates, sometimes Miranda requests her desire indirectly using off record. In a whole movie, she uses this type and form of utterance 5 times in giving direction to her subordinates. By saying “Is there some reason that my coffee isn’t here? Has she died or something?” it means that Miranda really wants her coffee available on her table and she is not patient to wait her coffee comes. Miranda comments to her subordinates very direct and using rhetorical question, makes her very authoritarian as a leader. Hence, this characteristic shows the autocratic style of her. iii. 110. “Oh, don’t be ridiculous, Andrea. Everybody wants this. Everybody wants to be us” is categorized as direction by leader because Miranda criticizes Andrea. In a whole movie, she uses this type of utterances once in criticizing Andrea. The utterance above happens inside the car, when Andrea sits beside Miranda. That conversation tells about how the job as Runway’s worker is need so many sacrifices. She criticizes the way how Andrea thinking, and Miranda disagree with how Andrea thinking about the job in Runway by saying “Oh, don’t be ridiculous, Andrea”. Proudly, Miranda ignores Andrea opinion and considers that her thought is the only one the good thinking. Hence, this characteristic shows the autocratic style of her.
