concerns on Garnier skincare product. The four models of Garnier skincare product advertisements were chosen as the data source because nowadays, they
are quite popular and many people especially the teenagers are attracted to use this skincare product. Besides, those advertisements are contained information which
is related to verbal and non-verbal signs.
1.5.2 Methods and Techniques of Collecting Data
The data was collected by documentation method and note taking technique was applied. There are three steps of techniques which were used to
collect the data. The first step was obtaining the printed skincare product advertisement from the internet. The second step was reading and note taking
were conducted, the meanings which were found in the advertisements were noted down and the third step was identifying the meaning and function of verbal and
non-verbal sign on Garnier product advertisement.
1.5.3 Methods and Techniques of Analyzing Data
Qualitative method was used in analyzing the data. The data was analyzed descriptively through three steps as follows: First, the verbal and non-verbal signs
of the advertisement were classified by using theory of sign proposed by Chandler 2001. Second, the types of meaning and function of the advertisement were
identified by using theory of meaning and function proposed by Leech 1974 and the third, the colour terms of the advertisement were described by using the theory
colour terms by Herman Cerrato 2012. The data was presented in order to give a clear and complete explanation that can make the audience understand every
detail of this study.
1.5.4 Methods and Techniques of Presenting Analysis
Descriptive method was used in presenting analysis. On the first problem, the data were classified into types of sign and the components of the
advertisement, afterwards, they were classified into the composition of sign which were signifier and signified to find out the meanings by showing the data in table.
Below the table, the explanations of the table were explained to make the readers can understand it easily. On the second problem, the types of meaning and
function were presented by showing it in the form of table and the explanations were also explained below.
