CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter presents conclusions and suggestions based on the research findings. First part is conclusions of the research problem. The suggestions part provides recommendation for those who are dealing with the Interlanguage: English for Senior High School Students X textbook; teachers, authorspublishers, and further researchers.

A. Conclusions

This was collaborative research. It focused on analysing the content of Interlanguage: English for Senior High School Students X textbook, which was provided by government. The aims of this research were to evaluate whether this textbook fulfils the criteria of a good textbook based on Cunningsworth’s theory and to find strengths and weaknesses of it. Based on the results of the research, the conclusions were drawn. Based on the results, Interlanguage textbook: English for Senior High School Students X achieved 65.69 fulfilment. The achievement showed that the textbook was considered as fair textbook. There were eight aspects evaluated in this research. Only three aspects which were considered good, they were language content 80, topic 100, and methodology 80. Five aspects were considered fair. Those aspects were aims and approaches 66.67, skills 66.67, and practical considerations 75. Design and organization 57.14 103 was considered sufficient fulfilment. One aspect was considered poor. It was teachers’ books 0. Second conclusion was the strengths and weaknesses of Interlanguage textbook: English for Senior High School Students X. It can be seen from the result that the strengths were on language content and topic because those two aspects achieved 80 and 100 fulfilment or were considered good. Almost all of the criteria in language content were fulfilled, only one criterion which was not fulfilled. Related to topic aspect, all of the criteria were completed. The topics provided were varied, interesting, close to students’ background, and there is no discrimination of gender, ethnic, origin, disability, or occasion. This textbook provides most of what is needed such as skill work, pronunciation, review units, vocabulary, and grammar summaries. Those materials are presented with various activities which facilitate students’ learning styles. Students’ communication ability is also developed by providing four basic skills, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Expressions which commonly used in daily conversation, such as introducing self, showing sympathy, accepting offer, making appointment, showing satisfaction, and thanking are provided to improve students’ confidence to communicate in real life interaction. Since Interlanguage textbook: English for Senior High School Students X is provided by government, everyone can access this textbook and download it for free. The government also provides printed version of this textbook. It can be bought in bookstores with very low price. Besides it is easy to obtain, this 104 textbook is also practical because it does not require any particular equipment to use. Besides those strengths, there were also weaknesses in Interlanguage textbook: English for Senior High School Students X. First weakness was about style and appropriacy. It was because this textbook does not provide any information about formal and informal expressions. Second weakness was that this textbook does not cover all stages in genre-based principle. Each skill should be elaborated based on stages in genre-based principle. The other weakness of Interlanguage textbook was the layout which is not attractive. Among those weaknesses, the fundamental ones were unavailability of teachers’ book and supporting materials such as workbook, recorded material for listening activities, and video. Those are important parts of textbooks. Teachers’ book is important because it gives detail information about how to use the textbook in teaching learning activities. While the supporting packages help he students to comprehend the materials given. Since there is no recorded materials, listening activities cannot be taken from Interlanguage textbook: English for Senior High School Students X.

B. Suggestions
