This approach is suitable because the function of this approach is to know the motivations of the characters in this novel. Therefore, it is hoped that this theory can help the writer in answering the motivations that are aimed to be analyzed.

C. Method of Study

In resolving this research, the writer used a library research method. It means that the writer got the materials or data taken from the library. The writer also searched from the internet as well for had some valuable information. This study used primary and secondary sources. The primary source in this study was certainly the novel The Fault in Our Stars written by John Green. The secondary sources were some articles related to the work and criticism that is related to the work. The writer analyzed several problems that had been formulated in problem formulation above using some steps. The first step was analyzing the literary work and reading it for several times in order to understand as well about the story in the novel. By understanding the story, the writer tried to find everything that is done by the author in this novel. In this novel The Fault in Our Stars, it could be seen that it was good characters in the story who are build the story alive and also the plot that is very interesting to be analyzed that is about the characters’ struggle and motivation. Finally the writer decided to analyze the characters and also the characterization of t he person’s characters. The third step was finding the motivation of the characters and how the motivation itself could be raised in their life in order t o cherish the characters’ life. After that, the writer finally made a conclusion. The conclusion itself contained the statement of the writer’s observation in the analysis that was presented in the thesis.
