The difference between Note-Taking Pairs and Directed Reading-

commit to user 77 Besides, those similarities above, several differences are also can be concluded from those previous related studies. They are as follow: 1. The research conducted by Akio Oshiro 2010 was observing the difference influenced of note-taking between the Pair condition and the Single condition. Meanwhile, in this research, the researcher observed Note-Taking Pairs as the teaching technique compared to other technique DR-TA. 2. The research conducted by I. A. Olaofe 1994 was focusing in enhancing the whole-class participation, and minimizing rowdiness. In addition, the research conducted by Akio Oshiro 2010 was involving the external variable of student’s background knowledge and experience, and other relating skill. Meanwhile, in this research, the researcher used the student’s linguistic intelligence as the moderate variable. 3. The research conducted by Clara Perez Fajardo 1996 resulted in determining the teacher’s type of guidance toward the students. Meanwhile, in this research, the researcher intended to get the evidence which teaching technique was more appropriate to different levels of the student’s linguistic intelligence.

E. Rationale

1. The difference between Note-Taking Pairs and Directed Reading-

Thinking Activity In Directed Reading-Thinking Activity DR-TA technique, the teacher becomes decision maker in reading class. All the activities in the class based on commit to user 78 the teacher’s instruction and she or he control the process of the learning. Although all the activities in the classroom are student-centered, teacher still plays a big role in the class activity. This technique makes the students become less independent during the teaching and learning process. Moreover, good background knowledge – especially social and cultural background – of the students on the reading materials is crucial in helping them make a good prediction. Students with less information will have difficulty in predicting what the reading text will be about. It might cause a frustration to them during the reading process. In Note-Taking Pairs, it requires different way in teaching and learning process. Because this strategy includes collaborative learning, the students will work collaboratively in teaching and learning process especially in reading class. It is a student-centered teaching technique. This collaboration will develop their ability in their social and human relation. Teacher does not play a big role in the teaching and learning process. Students become more independent to use their tools graphic organizers and to arrange and form their own notes. Note-Taking Pairs must be arranged to ensure the students achieve reading competency well. Hopefully, it can promote student’s learning and academic achievement especially in reading. The process of this technique is pair discussion. Before, the teacher divides the students into pairs, heshe asks the students to taking notes of the reading topicmaterial of the discussion. This brainstorming activity is done to activate the student’s schemata that can help them to be more ready in the teaching and commit to user 79 learning process. Once the teacher forms the pairs and appoint the leader, they are distributed a learning material in form of selected graphic organizers. This selection is needed to suit the types of the reading texts. In note-taking pairs, first the student individually takes the notes from reading material by using guided graphic organizers. Then they check the answer each other. If there is a friend who cannot answer correctly, another students should help herhim by explaining the material or ask the teacher. in this stage each member of the group should help each other and make sure they are really understand the material and know how to solve the exercise or the problem in the guided paper. This work will be done at least 12 meetings with different types of reading texts. At the end of each meeting, the students and the teacher will discuss to make sure the entire class gets the understanding of the material. Based on the discussion above, it is assumed that the students who are taught using Note-Taking Pairs technique have better reading competence than the students who are taught using DR-TA technique.
