1.1 Background of the study

Language as a means of communication can be used not only for giving informative message, but also for establishing and maintaining social relationship with others. Every person expresses his or her social relationship by language when she or he interacts with others to communicate. Language represents medium of most communication comprehended by people in the entire world. Language as medium of communication, has two types, which are written and spoken. Language as spoken language can be realized in oration, dialogue, presentation, etc. Language as written language can be realized in letter, news, short message, short story, etc. As a tool of communication, language has a function to express idea, knowledge, message, feeling, and wishes of someone to others. Therefore, language has an important role in human‟s life. It describes how people can cooperate and get along with one another. To cooperate and get along with foreigners, we need English which has been known as an international language and it is used in many countries in the world. English is very useful for cross-culture communication between people from different cultures. It is the reason why everybody hopes to master and can use it well. In Indonesia, English is taught as a foreign language for many years in all levels of language proficiency. English teaching includes four skills of language, namely: listening, speaking, writing, and reading. The materials for reading can be in various types, such as discourses or passages, articles, recipes, letters, stories, etc. Nowadays, a lot of book and information such as short story, novel, science book, comic, newspaper, magazine, use foreign language which cannot be understood. Therefore, it is the role of translation to translate those books or materials and information into the language which can be understood by the reader or participant, in this case is the Indonesian people with bahasa Indonesia as the national language. Newmark 1988:7 states that “translation is a craft consisting in the attempt to replace a written message and or statement in one language by the same message and or statement in another language ”. There are various problems to replace message in one language in another language, because not all of which have received sufficient attention. T ranslator‟s background knowledge is a factor to affect the translation quality. We often find lots of low quality products of translation around us, because the translator has low experience and skill in translation. Another problems in translation, based on Nababan 2008: 54-60 are different language system, semantic and stylistic complexity, quality of source language texts, ecology, features of material culture, and features of social culture. The conclusions are a translator must be able to solve every problem in translation, to make an equivalent between SL and TL. Catford in Hornby 1988: 15 states that “translation defined as the act of replacing te xt material in the SL by an equivalent text in the TL”. It means that in translating, the translator should find the equivalence of SL into TL. Even the translation cannot always match the same content in the target language. However, it is understood that translation is not a simple process. To catch the target reader, a translator has to know the communication situation of the source language text, analyzing text in order to determine the meaning, and then reconstructing the same meaning using the natural forms of the receptor language. In translation, a translator also has to know the grammatical structure because every language has different structure or grammar. “Grammar is a theory of language, of how language is put together and how it works” Gerot and Wignell, 1994: 2. Grammar is very important within the English language, since it is, in effect, the glue that holds the language together. With the use of incorrect grammar, sentences can become meaningless and their message is unclear. English and Bahasa are two different languages. Although they are different, but basically they have some correspondence units, namely; sentence, clause, phrase, word, and morpheme. Crowley, et al. 1995:2 states that morphemes are “the smallest meaningful units in a language ”. There are two kinds of morphemes, free morpheme and bound morpheme. Free morpheme is one which may stand alone in a language without requiring the presence of additional morphemes in order to be freely pronounceable as a word. For example: man, book, tea, sweet, cook, etc. While bound morpheme is one which cannot stand alone as a freely pronounceable word in a language, but which requires the presence of some other morpheme. For example: -ed, -ly, -ful, mis-, -ness, -s, etc. To arrange the messages from source language to target language, the translator has to shift the grammatical unit. Shift is needed when grammatical unit of source language is not found in the target language. “Shift is a translation procedure involving a change in the grammar from source language into tar get language” Vinay and Darbelnet in Newmark, 1988:85, for example: Unhappy is a word which consists of two morphemes, they are free morpheme and bound morpheme. Un- Bound Morpheme + happy Free Morpheme. In English struct ure the prefix „un‟ shows negative meaning and it will shift into a phrase, and if it is translated into Bahasa, it will be „tidak b ahagia‟. And also the word Cars which consists of two morpheme, Car Free Morpheme + -s Bound Morpheme. In English the su ffix „s‟ shows plural marker, and if it i s translated into Bahasa it will be „mobil-mobil‟, which uses complete reduplication or the process of repeating the entire root to express the morphological categories or meaning. This study focuses on translation rank-shift of bound morpheme in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‟s short story “A Scandal in Bohemia” and its translation “Skandal di Bohemia” by Daisy Diana. The main reason why the researcher chooses this short story is because there are bound morphemes in the source text, to express the particular meaning that are associated with them, are shifted in the target text to keep the meaning constant, so the messages can be communicative and natural.
