CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD
In a research, a method is needed to get a valid result. The method used in this study was qualitative method. Qualitative approach is a research process and
understanding based on research methodology of social phenomenon and human problems.
“The principle of this approach is the research start on the problem likes why, how, what, where, and when about social phenomenon states in around
” Iskandar, 2009: 33.
In this chapter, the researcher explains the method, which is used in this study. This chapter discusses research design, unit of analysis, source of data,
technique of data collection and technique of data analysis.
3.1 Research Design
In this thesis the researcher used Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ‟s short story
“A Scandal in Bohemia” and into Indonesian “Skandal di Bohemia” by Daisy Diana as the object of the analysis. Based on the analysis, the researcher used
qualitative method and the approach is descriptive which aims focuses on translation rank-shift of bound morpheme in this novel. Isaac and Michael
1987:46 state “descriptive method has a purpose to describe systemically a situation or area of interest factually and accurately”.
3.2 Unit of Analysis
The unit of analysis in this study was the sentences containing of bound morphemes in short story which contains 26 pages which are found in Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle ‟s short story “A Scandal in Bohemia”. The source
language text is English and the target language text is Indonesian.
3.3 Source of Data
The data of this study were written data. The data were taken from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
‟s short story “A Scandal in Bohemia”, published by Penguin Popular Classics in 1994, and contains 26 pages. It was translated into
Indonesian by Daisy Diana with the title “Skandal di Bohemia”, published by
PT. Gramedia Pustaka Utama, in Jakarta, February 1992 and contains 40 pages.
3.4 Techniques of Data Collection
The techniques of data collection that the researcher used in preparing the data related to the subject of this research was library study because the
data were taken from the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ‟s short story “A Scandal in
Bohemia” and its translation “Skandal di Bohemia” by Daisy Diana. The followings were two steps of the data collection techniques:
1. Searching the data from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‟s short story “A
Scandal in Bohemia ” and “Skandal di Bohemia” by Daisy Diana.
2. Choosing the data from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‟s short story “A
Scandal in Bohemia” and “Skandal di Bohemia” by Daisy Diana, because they were the first short story from the short story
compilation book by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
