2. Power Relation

The second social factor to be analyzed is power relation. It is differentiated into 3 categories: H – L High – Low, L – H Low – High, and same or equal. Power relation is determined by many factors such as: age, gender, and position at work, or position when somebody is talking or their nationalities as stated in this quotation: The influence of gender and asymmetries in power relations have been a major aspect of sociolinguistics discussion in recent years. The notion of a ‘genderlect’ has been proposed to account for some of the apparently systematic differences in the ways men and women use language. These differences can be observed across the whole range of linguistic variables, from plans of narrative and discourse organization, to the different accents that men and women have even from the same area. Schmidt; 2002; p. 26 Understanding the quotation above the researcher gets the idea that since power relation is influenced by many factors, the position of the speakers when they are considered high, low position, or same position depends on those factors. So from the data gathered, a speaker in one context can be the high and in another context can be the low or even the same position as the addressee as these examples:

From the conversations can be seen that their conversations show intimacy; a closeness between friends so that it is not awkward between them showing their affection by words. Since they act as partners in the conversations above, their power relation is the same equal.

b. High Power Relation of the Speaker

Bad Boys II Compared to example [yy], [zz], and [aaa] , example [bbb], [ccc], and [ddd] have different power relation between Marcus and Mike because Marcus here acts as the brother of Mike’s girlfriend; Syd. Since Marcus is older and he is the brother of Mike’s girlfriend, Marcus’ power relation is higher than Mike’s power relation although they are partners.

c. Low Power Relation of the Speaker

[eee] Look, man I ain’t got no trust fund. Bad Boys I The expression above is uttered by Marcus to Mike. In this example a change of power relation is happened. Marcus, who in the previous examples in high position, now becomes in low position because of the social status of Mike. The same thing will happen when the researcher uses nationality and age as the factors influenced the power relation usually people that have western nationalities such as European or American considered as high power compared with people that have Eastern nationalities such as African or Asian moreover when the people have mixed nationalities such as Afro-American or Mexican- American. It is also the same with age. When older people compared with younger people, the older people will be considered as high power. CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This part consists of conclusions and suggestions. After having discussions in chapter IV, conclusions and suggestions are needed in order to get deeper understanding about the analysis of Black English which is used in the sample movies.

A. Conclusions

In chapter IV, the problem formulations are answered. The objectives of this research are to identify the expressions of Black English used in the samples movies; Bad Boys I and II, and Rush Hour I and II. Other objectives of this research are to identify the characteristics of the expressions of the Black English used in the movies, and the influence of the social factors on the usage of Black English. Besides, the problem formulations of the research are: 1” What are the expressions of Black English used in the movies?” 2”What are the characteristics of the Black English used in the movies?” and 3”How is the Black English used by the speaker in the movies influenced by its social factors?” According to the discussion in chapter IV, it can be concluded that: First, most of the expressions of Black English in this research tend to show platitude and information as their referential utterances.
