J. Criteria of the Action Success
CAR is able to be called successful if it can exceed the criterion which has been determined, and fail if it cannot exceed the criterion which has been
determined. The criteria is used a measurement of the research.

action success as follow: 1. The achievement of students that is proved from final score of portfolio
assignment in past continuous tense showed 90 of students could achieve the target score
≥ 70. 2. The imp

CHAPTER IV RESULT AND DISCUSSION
This chapter presents the result of research. In this case, it mentions the way to improve students’ achievement on past continuous tense by using portfolio
assessment technique at class VIII.9 of SMPN 1 Pasar Kemis, Tangerang academic year 20102011. Related to the discussion of the result, it is divided into
three parts. Those are the previous implementation of CAR, the implementation of CAR, and the discussion of all data after implementing the CAR.
A. The Previous Implementation of CAR
Before implementing CAR, the writer did pre observation and pretest to know the general conditions of the classroom. These are the explanation:
1. The Result of Pre Observation
The writer conducted the observation as a beginning step in this study. Pre observation was conducted on Wednesday, November 10
th
2011 with the students as a subject. Pre observation was held in order to find the problem in
the classroom. Then the writer and the teacher followed up the hypothesis by conducting CAR.
Based on the observation the writer found that teaching and learning activity generally is very monotonous and deductive in teaching the past
continuous tense. The teacher gave the explanation of the concept and the using of the past continuous tense then asked for question to the students. Some
