CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY
This chapter provides five general descriptions on the research method, research participants, research instruments and data gathering techniques, data
analysis techniques, and research procedure.
A. Research Method
A classroom action research CAR was employed in carrying out this research. According to Reason Bradbury 2001: 1, classroom action research
can be defined as “a practice for the systematic development of knowing and knowledge but based in a rather different form from traditional academic
research”. The goal of classroom action research is to develop the researcher’s skills, understanding and knowledge of teaching, as well as to enhance the
students’ learning. In order to obtain the goal mentioned above, classroom action research
carries out a cyclical process which consists of four phases as presented in figure 3.1 Classroom Action Research Phases. Figure 3.1 shows that a classroom
action research cycle has four phases; those are planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The results of the reflection are used to re-plan the next teaching
practice. It occurs continually and forms a spiral namely classroom action research spiral Kemmis McTaggart, 1988 cited in Hopkins, 1993.

The main problem of this research was the implementation of contextual guessing strategy in learning vocabulary which was used to enhance students’
autonomy in learning vocabulary. Thus, a classroom action research CAR was conducted in order to describe how contextual guessing strategy in vocabulary
learning was implemented and how it enhanced students’ autonomy in vocabulary learning.
B. Research Participants
The participants of the research were grade XI students of Pangudi Luhur Sedayu Senior High School Bantul, Yogyakarta. The numbers of the participants
were thirty-six. Planning
