2. Identifying Learners Characteristic
The writer, in this section, collected the information about the staff of Bantul CBR‘s characteristic. It is by identifying the general characteristic and specific
skills, so that the writer then knew how these might be suitable with the format of speaking instructional materials. Other purpose was to get the data about the
learners‘ condition in order to have appropriation of the material design for them. There were 30 people who became the representatives of the staff of Bantul CBR.
Their ages were between 21-43 years old. Based on the data the writer got, they belonged to the advance level because most of them had ever had experience of
learning English from Junior High School until Academic level. But, not of all had the same level and skill of English, so the writer put them into the mid
beginner level. The writer believed that the learners were able to adapt the purpose of the
materials design, so an appropriate method was used. Cooperative learning was used in order the learners have activities to practice speaking more to the other.
So, hence, the writer chose some interesting activities in the materials design.
3. Identifying Goals, Topics, and General Purposes
The goals and the general purposes were made by the writer as the lacks and needs of English for communicative purpose of the staff of Bantul CBR. There
were eight topics which then presented to be nine units in the materials designed which adjusted with the lear
ners‘ interests. The topics were selected based on the questionnaire distributed to the learners, so all of those were suitable with the
61 needs of practicing English for speaking purposes. The details of goals, topics,
