CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter consists of two parts. The first part contains the conclusion of the study, while the second part includes the suggestions for the English teachers or instructors and the future researchers.

A. Conclusions

This study aimed to design English speaking instructional materials for the staff of Bantul CBR based on the Cooperative Learning. The materials were in order to enhance the learners‘ speaking ability. The writer also formulated two problems. Those problems were 1 How is a set of English speaking instructional materials for the staff of Bantul Community-Based Rehabilitation using the Cooperative Learning designed? and 2 What does the design of a set of English speaking instructional materials for the staff of Bantul Community-Based Rehabilitation using the Cooperative Learning look like? In the study, the writer employed Research and Development method. R D consisted of ten steps, meanwhile the writer only employed step 1 up to step 5. Those steps were 1 research and information collecting, 2 planning, 3 developing preliminary form of product, 4 product evaluation, and 5 main product revision. To answer the first question, the writer adapted instructional design model from Kemp, Yalden and Dick and Carey. The writer combined these three models to design the materials because the combination reveals a clear and complete step 77 in designing the materials. Those steps were 1 holding need analysis, 2 identifying learners‘ characteristic, 3 identifying goal, topics, and general purpose, 4 identifying learning objectives, 5 selecting syllabus, 6 selecting teaching learning activities, 7 listing subject content, 8 designing materials, and 9 conducting evaluation. Moreover, the instructional design model applied in the study was in line with R D method employed by the writer. To answer the second question, the writer presented the final version of the designed materials as follows. UNIT 1 : How was the presentation today? UNIT 2 : Can I help you? UNIT 3 : Who‘s speaking? UNIT 4 : How much is it? UNIT 5 : Where will the meeting be? UNIT 6 : Where is the meeting room? UNIT 7 : What does Carol look like? UNIT 8 : Are there any problem with those? UNIT 9 : What do you think about? Each unit was divided into five sections, namely Warming Up, Conversation, Language Focus, Activity - Language Practice, and What Have You Learnt? Warming Up included activities which aimed to activate the learners ‘ background knowledge. By doing so, it would be easier for the learners to come into the speaking. There were dialogues as the model of the use of language expression and grammar pattern in Conversation. This section also 78 provided word power that gave the learners some new words related to the materials in each unit. Language Focus provided detailed grammatical explanation and language expressions for the learners. Grammar exercises were also provided for the learners to practice their grammar mastery. Language expressions were to encourage learners using the correct expressions in making dialogues or presenting program. In the last part, What Have You Learnt?, the learners were to write down their reflection. It was hoped that by noting down their reflection, the students were able to learn from their mistakes to gain better achievement. Moreover, the materials were designed based on Cooperative Learning Theory. Evaluation was also conducted in the study by distributing questionnaire to respondents. The respondents gave positive responses by stating that the materials were interesting, creative, and well-developed. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed using central tendency. The results showed that the total mean was 3.72 of 5.00. It showed that the materials were appropriate for the staff of Bantul Community-Based Rehabilitation.
