U. MAMAT RAHMAT . Typological Analysis of Habitat Preference for Javan

Rhino Rhinoceros sondaicus, Desmarest 1822 in Ujung Kulon National Park. Under supervised by YANTO SANTOSA and AGUS PRIYONO KARTONO. The Javan Rhinoceros Rhinoceros sondaicus is one of the rarest amongst five species of rhinoceros in the world that are still existing today. Currently, their distribution is limited to only a handful of countries including Indonesia, Vietnam, and possibly in Cambodia and Laos. In Indonesia, the species is only found in Ujung Kulon National Park UKNP. Its population is concentrated in the Ujung Kulon peninsula. Today, the opportunity of a direct meeting with the animal is very small. Theoretically, large animals have preferences in their habitat and therefore tend to distribute uniformly or clumped. In consequence, the management of Javan Rhino population and habitat must consider their habitat preference. The objectives of this study were: 1 to identify dominant habitat components that determine the presence of Javan Rhinoceros in UKNP, and 2 to formulate habitat preference typology for Javan Rhinoceros in UKNP. The study was carried out in Management Section II area of UKNP, Pandeglang District, Banten Province. Materials used in the study consisted of: digital map of UKNP, distilled water aquades, tally sheet, binoculars, GPS, altimeter, digital camera, watch, stationery, thermohygrometer, salinometer, pH meter for soil, lakmus paper, plastic rope, ruler, plastic bucket and measuring tape. Method applied was direct field observation and literature review. Based on multiple linear regressions, the dominant habitat factors preferred Javan Rhino are salinity X 9 and soil pH X 7 . The equation formulated was Y = 6.25 - 1.12 X7 + 3.88 X9, indicating that one unit decrease of soil pH will increase the frequency of Javan Rhino presence by 1.12 points and a one point increase in the salinity level will increase the frequency of Javan Rhino presence by 3.88 points. Using Neu’s method of preferential index analysis, we can clued that from 9 locations surveyed, 4 locations had preferential indices greater than 1 Citadahan, Cibandawoh, Cikeusik and Cigenter. The data shows that Javan Rhinos prefer habitats located 400-600 m from the coast and areas located 0-400 m as a second preference. Key words : Ujung Kulon National Park, Javan Rhinos, habitat preferences. ABSTRAK
