41 describing the literal meaning of something and perlocutionary acts performing
the act of affecting people. Since this study analy zes students‟ written messages
to their lecturers based on some scenarios to show how students communicate their intention to the lecturers, illocutionary acts will be the focus instead of two
other categories. Illocutionary acts are divided into five categories, namely assertive,
directive, commissive, expressive and declaration. Here is the predicted use of illocutionary act based on the scenarios which were given to the participants.

The predicted results were expected to be based on the scenarios which were given in the questionnaire. The scenarios showed certain cases and the
participants should give their responses on the cases. The cases were designed by the researcher and there were some specific acts which were expected to be shown
on those cases. The first case can be seen as follows. Scenario 1
You want to have consultation with your lecturer advisor related to your thesisproposal seminar. But, you cannot meet himher in

42 himher personally to ask for permission to have consultation.
What do you write in your message? Based on the first case, the researcher wanted to know how the participants
showed their politeness when they were asking for permission to have consultation. Here, the participants were expected to show the act of requesting
which belongs to directive category. The second case was different from the previous case. The case can be
seen as follows. Scenario 2
You are doing your final project for a course. The lecturer allows you to send the draft of your final project to hisher email so that
heshe can check it. You are planning to send your draft as an attachment to your lecturer via email. Write down the introductory
message of your email. In this case, the researcher wanted to know how the participants showed their
politeness when they were about to tell and give the introductory message to their lecturer. Therefore, the participants were expected to give the act of reporting
which belongs to assertive category in this case. In the third case, there was another act, besides requesting and reporting,
which was expected by looking at the case. The case can be seen as follows. Scenario 3
You are on your way to finish your final project for a course. You have to present your project to the whole class as the final test. But,
before presenting your project, the lecturer asks you to send himher your power point slides. You have sent the power point
