CHAPTER IV FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter the writer discusses about finding of language style used by Jonas in “The Giver” movie. The writer used Martin Joos theory in analysis to classifying Jonas utterance in five types. Furthermore, analyzing the function of language used by Jonas on the movie based on the theory.

4.1 Finding

The finding of this study is divided into two parts based on the research problem. The first part about kinds of language style used by Jonas in “The Giver” movie and the second part is the language functions used by Jonas in “The Giver” movie. The data which are used of this study are taken from script “The Giver” movie directed by Phillip Noyce. The writer analyzes based on the page and line which consist of dialogue focus on the Jonas as the main character of “The Giver” movie.

4.1.1 Kinds of Language Style in “ The Giver” movie

Based on explanation in chapter two, Martin Joos 1962 classify that language style is divided into five types. They are frozen style, formal style, consultative style, casual style and intimate style. 4.1.1.1 Formal Style

Formal style is used by happening as a matter of course and without question. This type gives priority in arranging words to addresses which appropriate polite act and legitimate situation. This type commonly uses in meeting, discussion, ceremonial with formal situation. This study focuses on Jonas conversation as main character in “The Giver” movie. Afterward, there are some explanations of four data in Jonas language as follows: Excerpt datum 1125 in duration 00:02:05 until 00:02:10 Fiona: Jonas Asher : I apologize, were late, like God actually to come say goodbye the teacher. Jonas: I accept your apology. The conversation above happens between Jonas, Fiona and Asher. Jonas rides his cycle alone and feels strange with himself, because he is different. All his friend cannot look a leave color but Jonas do. His friends consider to him that he is crazy because of the different talking with others. When Jonas rides, Fiona and Asher come and call Jonas directly. They regret and apologize to Jonas because Fiona and Asher come late to their appointments. Jonas accepts their apologizing with a sentence is used admirable in community. The utterance “I accept your apology” is represent polite sentences used in expression for accepting apologize in Jonas community. All society should be used precise language in communicate.
