expressions used for apologizing appropriately.
F. Instructional Strategy
This part was the result of the sixth step of Dick and Carey Systems Approach Model, developing instructional strategy. To help the students achieve
the indicators optimally, some strategies were developed in each unit. The strategies reflected the used teaching method and approaches in the instructional
materials. As mentioned previously, each unit in the materials were divided into three parts. They were Identifying Expressions, Getting Meaning, and Using
Expressions. To familiarize the students with the expressions to be learned,
Identifying Expression became the first part in each unit. This part in every unit always applied the same method, Audiolingual Method. This method was selected
because it could help contextualize key structures and illustrate situations in which the structures might be applied. Repetition was the technique mostly used in this
part. Since the seventh grade students were profoundly hearing impaired, the repetition was not preceded by listening activity but by lip reading activity. By
using this technique, the students could be accustomed to pronouncing English utterances correctly since the first-time learning.
To deepen the students‟ comprehension in the meaning of the learned expressions, Getting Meaning was developed as the second part in every unit. In
each unit, this part applied combination of methods and approach, such as

Grammar Translation Method, Direct Method, and Communicative Language Teaching. Such combination was applied to make the students focus not only on
the vocabulary mastery but also on the development of their speaking ability. In “Getting Meaning” in Unit 1, Grammar Translation Method and Communicative
Language Teaching were combined to facilitate the students to understand the meaning of English expressions in Bahasa Indonesia through a spoken matching
exercise. In the same part in other units, Direct Method was added into the combination to facilitate the students to master noun and verb vocabulary through
the use of pictures in spoken translation and matching-translation exercises. To enable the students to communicate in English well, the exercises did
not only stop in English expressions and vocabulary recognition. The students needed more exercises which let them use the learned expressions and vocabulary
in context. Therefore, Using Expressions was developed as the third part in each unit. This part also took a role in introducing simple grammar to the students
implicitly. In every unit, this part implemented Audiolingual Method and Communicative Language Teaching through substitution drills so that the students
would be able to communicate in English appropriately because they were accustomed to using the language. The distribution of the instructional strategy in
all units was shown in Table 4.8.
