B. Research Setting

In order to achieve its objective which was to design English speaking instructional materials for hearing impaired students, the research was conducted in SLB Wiyata Dharma I which was located in Jalan Magelang Km. 17 Margorejo Tempel Sleman 55552. It consisted of observation of the seventh grade classroom activities and interview of the seventh grade hearing impaired students and their English teacher. The observation was carried out on April 14, May 5, and May 19, 2011. Then, the interview of the students was done on May 21, May 23, and May 26, 2011 while the interview of the English teacher was done on May 14, 2011.

C. Research Participants

Participants were needed to bring evidence to support the validity of this research. In this research, the participants were divided into two groups as follows.

1. Participants in research and information gathering

The participants in this step were the seventh grade hearing impaired students and the English teacher of SLB Wiyata Dharma I. These students were chosen as the participants because they were able to give information for the research on how the English speaking instructional materials should be developed as what they wanted. Moreover, their being chosen was also due to their limited experiences in learning English since there were only limited special schools giving English learning to such students with special needs as them. Meanwhile, the English teacher in this PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 45 school was chosen as the participant as well since she was the closest person among the students who exactly knew the uniqueness of each student. Therefore, she was the appropriate person who could give information about what became the students‟ potentials and weaknesses and what the students actually needed the most, which could support the development of the English speaking instructional materials.

2. Participants in product verification

The participants in this step were the English teacher of the seventh grade hearing impaired students of SLB Wiyata Dharma I and the English lecturers in the area of Language Education having graduate degree S2, majoring English Language Teaching, and teaching Instructional Design. The English teacher was chosen because she was the one who got the direct impacts of the developed English speaking instructional materials when applying the materials to the seventh grade hearing impaired students. Therefore, she was able to tell which parts of the English instructional materials to be maintained and to be improved. Meanwhile, the English lecturers with the mentioned criteria were also chosen because they were considered as experts in the field of instructional materials development for certain level of learners. Therefore, they could give feedback on the English speaking instructional materials for the seventh grade hearing impaired students of SLB Wiyata Dharma I designed in this research. D. Instruments and Data Gathering Technique

To help gather the data needed, several instruments and techniques were employed. In this research, the instruments and the techniques were divided into two groups as follows.

1. Instruments and techniques for research and information gathering

The instruments used in this step were field notes and interview questions. Field notes were the instrument for observation which was used to observe the learning context as well as the teacher‟s teaching activity and the learners‟ behaviours in daily teaching learning process conducted in the classroom. Meanwhile, interview questions were the instrument for interview which was used to get deeper information about the learner s‟ needs and characteristics to be adjusted to the activities in the designed instructional materials. Both the field notes and the interview questions were intended for the seventh grade hearing impaired students and the English teacher of SLB Wiyata Dharma I.

2. Instrument and technique for product verification

The instrument used in this step was questionnaire. Questionnaire was the instrument for survey which was used to have verification and to get feedback from experts to improve the designed instructional materials. This instrument was intended for the English teacher of the seventh grade hearing impaired students of SLB Wiyata Dharma I and the English lecturers in the area of Language Education having graduate degree S2, majoring English Language Teaching, and teaching Instructional Design. E. Data Analysis Technique

After the data needed for the research were gathered, they were then analyzed. As mentioned in the previous section, the data were only obtained in the steps of research and information gathering and product verification. The following was the explanation of how the data needed from these two steps were analyzed. In research and information gathering, the analysis of the data was done through some techniques. They were current curriculum review, observation, and interview. From the first technique which was current curriculum review, the analysis was done by overviewing School-Based Curriculum in order to find out the goals of speaking skill to be fulfilled by the seventh grade hearing impaired students. From the last two techniques, observation and interview, raw data were obtained. The raw data were then analyzed and the analysis was reported in the form of descriptive narration since the type of questions mentioned in these techniques were open questions which enabled the participants to give answers freely according to their viewpoints. Meanwhile, in product verification, the analysis of the data was done through one technique which was questionnaire. The raw data obtained from the questionnaire were analyzed and then reported in descriptive narration like what was done in the previous step.
