CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This chapter presents the conclusions of the research and the recommendations for further research. The conclusion discusses the answer from
the research problem, while the recommendations contain the suggestions for the further research using movies in classroom to help the students in improving their
pronunciation.
A. Conclusions
As stated in Chapter I, through this research, there were research problems that should be answer. The research problems are what pronunciation problems
that the students of class XI EL of SMK Marsudi Luhur II Yogyakarta face and how
movies improve students‟ pronunciation of class XI EL of SMK Marsudi Luhur II Yogyakarta.
Based on the analysis, the students of class XI EL of SMK Marsudi Luhur II Yogyakarta faced the difficulty in pronouncing English words correctly that
affected on their speaking ability. The pronunciation problems that they faced were sound substitutions and sound deletions. They often pronounce English
words based on their understanding toward the mother language style. As a result, their pronunciation became unintelligible. They tend to pronounce the
words based on its spelling. When they produced odd sounds, their friends would
laugh at them. It made the students hesitate to speak in English. The situation where the students became passive learners did not make the teaching and
learning activities worked well. Looking at that situation, the researcher decided to offer the problem
solution using interesting media to help the student to improve their pronunciation. The researcher decided to employ movies in the classroom. The
researcher chose movies because it has benefits to be used in teaching pronunciation. Movies give understandable example of pronunciation from the
native speakers. Kenworthy 1997 mentions that it would be better if the media in teaching pronunciation contain the native language as it gives clear example of
native language and the students would imitate the sound precisely. The use of subtitle in the movies also helped the students to learn pronunciation properly.
They could see match the words with its sounds precisely. Moreover, playing movies in the classroom created different atmosphere that made the students
engaged with the lesson. They were motivated to learn through the learning media they liked.
Based on the findings of the research, the researcher concluded that the use of movies in classroom to help the students of XI EL of SMK Marsudi Luhur II
Yogyakarta in improving their pronunciation was successfully done. The students learnt the correct pronunciation of English words from the movies played in the
classroom. They agreed that the movies gave understandable example of pronunciation. The tried to imitate the way of the native speakers pronounce the
words. Before the implementation of the action, the students often pronounced
English words unintelligible by substituting sound and deleting sound. They pronounced the English words using their mother language style. After the
implementation of the action, they students could decrease the use of mother language style in pronouncing English words. Through the movies played, they
learnt that English language has different way in sounding the words. In addition, they became confident to speak as they could produce the correct sounds.
Furthermore, using movies in classroom could be interesting media for teaching. It could increase students‟ interest in following the lesson. When the
students were well-motivated, they would learn easily. From the finding, the students could learn pronunciation easily and fast because they were enthusiastic
about the activity of watching movies. They enjoyed the movies and it made them enjoy learning the pronunciation as well. It was seen from their response to
the movies and the researche r‟s instruction for learning pronunciation. When they
were watching the movies, they tried to imitate the natives‟ pronunciation by repeating the pronunciation of certain words for many times, especially repeating
words which were difficult to pronounce. The use of movies in classroom also helped the students enrich their
vocabulary. Some of the students wrote on the questionnaire that they could learn new words from the movies. Another benefit of using movies in the classroom
was that it helped the students improve their speaking skill by observing the way of native speakers communicate using correct expressions.
The movies used in this research really helped the students improve their pronunciation effectively. Those two movies could answer the problem of this
research. The students showed good improvement in pronunciation after watching the movies. The students learnt the correct pronunciation from the
native speakers in the movie. The movies could give an understandable example to learn pronunciation. Besides, using movies in the classroom could increase
students‟ interest in following the lesson.
