The translator should pay attention deeper on the target reader circumstances. According to the background of the study, the researcher is interested in carrying out a research with the title “The Translation of Culturally-Bound Words in the Novel “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” Translated by Listiana Srisanti A Descriptive Study”.

B. Problem Identification

Based on the background of study above, it would be better to identify the problem covering this research. The researcher identifies the problems as follows. 1. How are culturally-bound words in this novel translated into Indonesian language in order to reproduce accurate meaning in the target language? 2. Does the translation communicate the same meaning as the source language? 3. Does the audience for whom the translation is intended understand it clearly?

C. Problem Limitation

A translator should keep well the unity of the text translated. One of the ways is by paying attention carefully to culturally-bound words. She he should master in transferring those words, so what the author intends can be delivered without any distortion towards reader in the target language. Peter Newmark states that there are five cultural organizations. They are: 1. ecology, 2. material cultures artifacts, 3. social culture, 4. organizations, Customs, Activities, Procedures, Concepts, and 5. gestures and habits.

D. Problem Statement

Based on the problem limitation, the problem is formulated as follow. a. How are culturally-bound words in this novel translated into Indonesian language in order to reproduce accurate meaning in the target language?

E. The Objectives of the Research

The objectives of the study are: 1. to find out how culturally-bound words are translated into Indonesian by paying attention on the perspective of semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics, and 2. to know the adjustments needed by translator in delivering the translation into Indonesian language as the target language.

F. The Benefits of the Research

The benefits of the research that the researcher expects are: 1. For Translators a. This research is useful to understand the adjustments of translating culturally-bound words by adding information and adjusting lexical and grammatical points so they could transfer the messages intended well without creating ambiguity and misleading to the target readers. b. This research is aimed to help better translation work quality especially for the translation of cultural background. 2. For Researchers This study can be a useful guidance in having a field research on the translation of cultural background. 3. For Scholars This study is also useful for researchers or scholars in investigating cultural background by using other sources of data analysis. Chapter II Theoretical Review In this chapter, the researcher describes theories related to the topic used to analyze the translation of sentences containing culturally-bound words in novels “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” authorized by Joanne Kathleen Rowling and its Indonesian version and ”Harry Potter dan Pangeran Berdarah Campuran” translated by Listiana Srisanti.
