Abstract
Ba ckg rou nd : Seedof Swiet enia m ahagoni Jacq. cont ains alkaloids, saponins,
flavonoids, t rit erpenoids, st eroids, and t annins which were t hought t o prot ect liver
from free r adicals.I n present st udy, Swiet enia m ahagony Jacq.seed ext ract w as
evaluat ed for it s pr ot ect ive effect on paracet am ol- induced liver dam age in m ice.
M e t ho ds:To evaluat e t he hepat oprot ect ive effect s of Swiet enia m ahagony Jacq.
seed ext ract , 28 m ale Sw iss webst er m icewere equally divided int o four groups.
Anim als of group I ( K) and group I I ( P1 ) were given aquadest for 14 days. Group I I I
( P2 ) received 14 m g/ 25 g body weight of m ice of Swiet enia m ahagony Jacq. seed
ext ract and t he last group ( P3 ) received 28 m g/ 25 g body w eight of m ice of
Sw iet enia m ahagony Jacq. seed ext r act for 14 days.Paracet am ol was given t o
groups of P1 , P2, andP3. Mice were sacrificedon t he 15 t h day and hist ological
preparat ion was m ade t o evaluat e hist ological dam age on liver. Liver hist ological
feat ur es were assessed by count ing t he num ber of hepat ocyt e on cent rolobuler zone
undergoing pyknosis, karyorhexis, and karyolysis. Dat a were analyzed using t he
OneWay ANOVA test (α = 0.05) and then were continued with Post Hoc Mult iple
Com parisons ( LSD) test (α = 0.05).
Re sult s:The m ean liver hist ological dam age score was significant ly higher on group
of P1 = 60.71 + 7.521, w hilegr oup of K= 9.86+ 1.574 as t he less.P2 gr oup had fewer
num bers of liver hist ological dam age ( 32 .57+ 2.573) com pared t o t he
P3 group( 43 .57+ 3.101) . The result s of OneWay ANOVA and LSD t est showed t hat
t her e was significant difference bet ween t he four groups ( p = 0.000) .
Co nclusio ns:Sw iet enia m ahagony Jacq.seed ext ract show ed prot ect ive effect
against t he hepat ot oxicit y induced by paracet am olin m ice.Swiet enia m ahagony
Jacq.seedext ract w it h t he dose of 14 m g/ 25 g bodyw eight of m ice showed a higher
hepat oprot ect ive effect t han t he dose of 28 m g/ 25 g body w eight of m ice.
