ABSTRACT

  

The growing number of Holy Mary shrine and its pilgrim activity shows that doing

religious journey is important for people in their daily life. Mother Mary as a figure has

important role in the pilgrims’ critical situations. For the pilgrim, she is a hope and an

answer of every problem. A portrait of experiencing a pilgrimage at Holy Mary shrine

becomes a main point in caring public mental health through religious aspect. A

research had been done through semi structured interview with 9 (nine) catholic people

who have made religious journey in Holy Mary shrine in a district near Yogyakarta.

These people experiences of their religious journey show a belief that their wishes will

be answered and also, the situation of the religious place attracts the pilgrims to come

and share their daily problems. Holy Mary figure is showed as a figure of a mother that

can fulfill her pilgrims’ needs which makes the pilgrims fells relief. This research is

completed with a text data as a comparison to shows the influence of the church, as a

religion department, in creating Holy Mary figure.
