Students are involved in more than listening

83 and Eison about students‟ participation in English class 1991, there are at least four aspects. The researcher will discuss how active learning increased class XF students‟ participation in English class by identifying those four aspects.

1. Students are involved in more than listening

One of the aspects of students‟ participation according to Bonwell and Eison was students were involved in more than listening. “Listen should be followed by „respond‟ because listen is not enough,” Riddell, 2003: 6. Comparing to teaching method applied by the English teacher, there was a difference related to t eacher‟s role. Before the implementation, the English teacher talked and explained anything. Sometimes he wrote on the board the important things and students should also write them down. It could be seen from the result of interview with the teacher and observation result in preliminary study. By implementing this way of teaching, the students did nothing but listened to the teacher during the class. They did not even have the chance to ask questions. The teacher also rarely gave questions to the students. According to Davies Pearse 2000, “it is not always the most generic teacher that creates the most dynamic lessons.” During the implementation of active learning, the researcher gave opportunities to the students to get involved in some learning activ ities which required students‟ activeness. In delivering the material, the researcher did not explain all important things but the researcher often asked for students‟ opinion and students‟ knowledge related to the material. The researcher often asked questions to the students. It occurred when the PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 84 researcher and the students reviewed and when students and researcher had a class discussion. Based on the observation result, it was able to activate the students to be more active in participating. Based on questionnaire result, the students stated that they were able to take part in English learning process and not just listened to the teacher. Active learning enabled the students to speak in English, enabled the students to ask and answer questions, and enabled the students to share opinion. During the implementation of active learning, the students were doing things and thinking about the things they were doing. They did not only speak or read or write without any consideration. The students were sometimes required to share their opinion about their friends‟ answers or opinion. It also enabled the students to think more seriously and to analyze more deeply. Since active learning method implemented by the researcher covered some activities which required student s‟ participation, the students did not only listen to the teacher during the whole class. The students had more opportunities to do something related to English learning process.

2. Less emphasis is placed on transmitting information and more on
