CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS
In this chapter, the researcher presents the research conclusion and recommendation of the implementation of active learning in English class. The
researcher also proposed suggestions for the English teacher, students, and future research who may conduct the similar research.
A. Conclusion
This was a classroom action research. This research was conducted in order to find out how active learning increases the participation of class XF
students of SMA Bopkri I Yogyakarta in English class. The classroom action research conducted was based on Kemmis and McTaggart’s model, which
consisted of four steps in each cycle. They were planning, action, observation, and reflection. Students’ participation in this research refers to the indicators of
students’ participation proposed by Bonwell and Eison 1991. The conclusion covers the description of active learning implementation process in English class
and the increase of students’ participation. Based on the data gathered through observation sheets and field notes, it
could be seen that students of class XF gave good response during the implementation of active learning in their English class. The students participated
more actively during English class. Besides, the students also showed that they were happy whenever they would have fun activities in English class. It gave

students more opportunities to participate and to practice their English. Therefore, their English developed.
In this research, researcher also employed questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to the students in order to find out students’ opinion
about active learning being implemented in their English class. The result of the questionnaire was that the students showed good response. The students liked
active learning to be applied in their English class because it was fun and it made the students participate more actively. Students also could increase their abilities
of speaking, listening, pronunciation, and writing. The students wanted active learning to be implemented in their future classes.
Besides questionnaire, the researcher also conducted interview with English teacher. The
interview aimed to gain information about teacher’s opinion and suggestion in the implementation of active learning in English class. The
teacher thought that active learning was good to implement. It let the students participate more actively. It also increased students’ participation, so that they
were able to explore and develop their English abilities. Students’ participation in English class examined in this research was
based on some aspects stated by Bonwell and Eison about students’ participation 1991. 1 Students are involved in more than listening. During the
implementation of active learning, students did not only l isten to the teacher’s
explanation. Active learning covered some learning activities which let the students get involved in not only listening to the lecture, but also in giving their
opinion, working together with friends. Students had more opportunities to ask

and answer questions. 2 Less emphasis is placed on transmitting information and more on developing students’ skills. When active learning was not implemented
by the English teacher, what students did in class was listeni ng to the teacher’s
explanation about the theories of English. During the implementation of active learning, the students got the opportunities to develop their skills. They spoke,
they listened, they read, and they wrote more often. 3 Students are involved in higher
– order thinking. Due to the implementation of active learning, the students were get used to think and analyze something more critically. It was proved by
students’ ability in giving comments to their friends’ performance and students’ ability in giving information about what they knew whenever they had group
discussion and class discussion. It was different from their former activities which did not give them opportunities to do so. 4 Students are engaged in activities.
The learning activities covered by active learning method varied. All students were involved in learning activities such as group discussion, class discussion,
games, and quiz.
