59 students. It could be assumed that the students still had problems in choosing
prepositions at, in, and on to be translated from Indonesian prepositions di, pada, di dalam, and di atas.
b. The Students’ Achievement in the Whole Part of the Test
In order to find the final score of the test for each student, the researcher counted the correct answers achieved by the students in the test. The total correct
answers in both parts of the test were divided by the total number of items in the test which is 36. Then, the result of this calculation was multiplied by 100. The
final scores obtained by the students are presented in Table 4.3.
Table 4.3 The Students’ Final Scores in the Test

It was illustrated in Table 4.3 that there were no students who achieved score on the range of 90-100. It was only one student 1.6 achieving the highest
score, which falls on the range of scores 80-89. The lowest score was achieved by

60 one student 1.6 on the range of 30-39. There were thirty students 49.2
whose scores ranged from 50-59. According to Peraturan Akademik Universitas Sanata Dharma Yogyakarta
2002: 14, 56 of the total score is the minimum standard of mastery. It is the standard to pass with sufficient level. The complete scoring category is listed as
follows.
Score Category
80-100 very good A
70-79 good B
56-69 sufficient C
50-55 insufficient D
≤ 49 poor E
Based on the scoring category above, it could be seen that the students who achieved 56 of the highest score were classified into the category of sufficient
C. If the students only achieved 55 of the highest score, they were classified into the category of insufficient D. The minimum score for the category of good
B and very good A was determined by the lecturers. The scoring category above was applied to classify the students’ achievement in the test. The students’
scores in relation to the category are presented in Table 4.4.

61 Based on the data presented in Table 4.4, it is seen that there was only one
student 1.6 who achieved the category of very good A and there were four students 6.6 who entered the category of good B. The other thirty five
students 57.4 were classified into the category of sufficient C. The highest number of students fell on this category. The insufficient D category consists of
seventeen students 27.9, meanwhile there were four students 6.6 who entered the category of poor E. Then, it could be concluded that there were forty
students 65.6 who passed the test. The other twenty one students 34.4 did not pass the test since their score did not achieve the category of sufficient.
From the results of the test, which was administered to the fifth semester students, it could be seen that the mean score of the test was 59.4. It meant that the
average of total correct answers that were achieved by each student was 59.4. In this study, the computation of the mean was worthwhile to determine the level of
the students’ mastery of prepositions at, in, and on. Then, it could be concluded that the fifth semester students’ mastery of prepositions at, in, and on in number
was 59.4. According to the academic regulation of Sanata Dharma University which is stated in chapter 2, the minimum standard of the mastery is 56 of the
maximum achievement. The mean score 59.4 was included in the category of ‘sufficient’ since this category ranged from 56-69. It meant that the mastery of
prepositions at, in, and on among the fifth semester students of the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University was in the
category of ‘sufficient’.
