there were thirty one students 50.8 who made error in answering item number 1. Most of the students who became the respondents of this test had made errors in
both items. They tended to choose preposition in in answering both of test items. Meanwhile, the test items investigating preposition at indicating place that were
easy to the students, fell on items numbers 3, 30, and 7. There were forty eight students 78.7 who answered items numbers 3 and
30 correctly. It means these items were the easiest items among the whole items investigating preposition at indicating place for the students. Meanwhile, in item
number 7, there were forty one students 67.2 who answered this item correctly. By seeing the data above, it could be concluded that there were quite
many students, who became the respondents of this test, were still confused about the use of preposition at indicating place.
b. Students’ Mastery of Preposition at Indicating Time
This part of discussion presents the students’ mastery of preposition at indicating time based on the test result. The illustration of students’ errors in using
preposition at indicating time could be seen in Table 4.6.

Based on the data in Table 4.6, it could be seen that there were many students who made error in Part 2 number 4. There were fifty two students
85.3 who made error in this item. It means that most of the students who took this test still faced difficulty in using preposition at indicating time, which was
translated from Indonesian into English. Most of the students who took this test made error in translating Indonesian preposition pada in this sentence. They
tended to translate the word pada in this sentence with preposition in. In Part 1, the test items investigating preposition at indicating time that were
problematic to the students, fell on item number 22. There were twenty eight students 45.9 who made error in answering item number 22. Most of the
students who became the respondents of this test had made error in answering this item. They tended to choose preposition in in answering this test item.
Meanwhile, the test items investigating preposition at indicating time that were easy to the students fell on items numbers 5, 17, 25, and 26. There were 52
students 85.2 who answered item number 26 correctly. It means that this item was the easiest item among the whole items investigating preposition at indicating

66 time for the students. In item number 5, there were forty six students 75.4 who
succeed to answer this item correctly. Meanwhile, in item number 17, there were twenty students 32.8 who failed to answer this item and in item number 25,
there were twenty three students 37.7 who failed to answer this item correctly. Then, by seeing the data above, it could be concluded that there were many
students who were still confused about the use of preposition at indicating time, especially when it was translated from Indonesian preposition di or pada.
Although they had problem in answering item number 4 in Part 2, most of them had good achievement in answering most of the test items investigating
preposition at indicating time in Part 1. Thus, the students’ mastery of preposition at could be seen in Table 4.7.

67 Based on the data in Table 4.7, the percentage of students’ achievement in
preposition at was 57. This percentage could be obtained by dividing the total correct answers in the test items investigating preposition at by the total answers
in preposition at. The total answers in preposition at were obtained by multiplying the total students who became the respondents of the test by the total number of
items investigating preposition at in the test. By seeing the percentage of students’ achievement in preposition at, which was 57, it could be assumed that the
students’ ability in using this preposition was sufficient since it reached the minimum standard of mastery, which is 56. Although it had reached the
minimum standard of mastery, the percentage of students’ achievement in this preposition was still far from good quality. It means the students need to improve
their understanding about preposition at.
