From all the collected evidences, it can be concluded that Kelsea’s
characteristics have influence in solving the problems that she faces. Wisdom and courage help Kelsea in making her decisions. Those characteristics are shown by
Kelsea to prove that she deserves to be a true queen who puts the importance of her people above everything.
C. The Messages as Seen through Kelsea’s Response to Her Conflicts
In this section, the writer elaborates the messages that exist in every conflict that Kelsea faces. According to Kenny in How to Analyze Fiction, it is
explained that when people are talking about a message, they usually also discusses the moral values. Thus, it can be concluded that the moral values could
be a good or bad learning 1966: 89. Every problem-solving that Kelsea does reflects the implied messages contained the moral values in real life. Kelsea is a
character that has the brave and wise characteristics. Because of her characteristics, Kelsea also faces some internal and external conflicts. The writer
can conclude the moral messages by seeing how Kelsea deals with her conflicts.
1. Be Wise in Taking any Decision
The first message can be seen through most internal conflicts that Kelsea faces. The dilemma that she faces on her way back to Tearling reveals the
message the writer tries to find out. She chooses to be the leader of Tearling, as a queen which is a wise decision that she has chosen. She prefers to leave all her
memories and hesitancy to save the people of Tearling who really need a savior at that time.
The external conflicts that shows the message is when Kelsea has an argument with Pen in the beginning of the story. Kelsea is showing her prestige in
the beginning. She does not want pen to build her a tent. The writer can describe her wise characteristics by seeing how humble she is when she faces a difficult
situation and decide what is the best choice that she can make. This conflict reveals the message when Kelsea wisely lets Pen help her.
Her decision on letting Pen help her is also the wise choice that she has made. She realizes that if she keeps stubborn with her decisions for not letting Pen help her,
she will stuck on making the tent by herself for a long time. If she has already let Pen help her to build the tent, she will not get in trouble. The tent will be built
easily and they can take a rest more longer. By this statement, the writer concludes that if
Kelsea’s being humble in any stiuation, it is much easier for her to solve her problem. Kelsea realizes that if
she is still stubborn, she will lose the respect from other people around her.
2. Be Brave to Take a Risk
Brave characteristic that Kelsea has helps her many times in any situation that she has faced. The next
message is shown through Kelsea’s decision. This decision is about ending the Mort Treaty by stopping the shipment of slave and
