55 11. Learning writing as process will be more effective rather than result. It helps students to understand well what they have written. But still, the weakness is about time. 12. According to the teacher, the basic principle of KTSP is helping students from unable to do something to be able to do something. Since, this approach helps students especially how to process the writing, it can be concluded that Process- based Writing support the KTSP.

b. Students’ need based on the questionnaire given to the students

The questionnaires were distributed to the grade VIII students of SMP Institut Indonesia Yogyakarta on March 12, 2010. The writer distributed the questionnaires in one class because there is only one class on each grade in the Junior High School. The respondents were 10 male students and 7 female students. From the result of need analysis, fifteen students 88 of SMP Institut Indonesia Yogyakarta found difficulties in learning English especially writing. Only two students 12 did not find difficulties in learning writing in English. The difficulties they faced were finding idea 82 students, developing idea 88 students, choosing appropriate words 76 students, writing with good grammar 64 students. Thirteen students 76 said that they were active in class, but 4 students 23 were not active. Thirteen students 82 said that they liked to study in group while 3 students 18 said they didn’t like to study in group. This information is important to determine whether the activity in the 56 designed materials is in form of group or individual. Students liked to study in group because they could learn from the smarter 76 students, give suggestions 58 students, reduce sense of inferiority because there was no competition in group, and cooperate with others which made the lesson more enjoyable 58 students. Fifteen students 88 said that they liked to get suggestions from their friends. Only two students 12 did not like to get suggestions from friends. The writer also asked the students a question about topics that the students like in learning English. The grade VIII students of SMP Institut Indonesia Yogyakarta have difficulties in learning writing. Their difficulties are varied. Some of them are difficult to find ideas, develop the idea, write with good grammar and choose the appropriate words. 2. Most of the students are active. It supports the mechanism of the learning activity. It eases the teacher to vary the activity. 3. The students of grade VIII of SMP Institut Indonesia Yogyakarta like to work in group. They like to cooperate with others, get correction from peers, learn from others, give suggestions, etc. 4. The topics which the students mostly like were sharing experience, holiday, sport, animals, and school. Those topics were developed to make eight units of the designed materials. From the results of the interview and the analysis of the questionnaires which were distributed to students, the learners’ needs were clear. All of those results were used together with some related resources to design and develop set writing instructional materials which were appropriately applied to the students.
