CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS
This chapter discusses two parts. They are conclusion and suggestions. The conclusion presents the findings in answering the first question stated in the
problem formulations. The suggestions are proposed to the English teachers especially, junior high school teacher and those who are interested in conducting
reseach on this field.
A. Conclusion
The aim of this study is to answer the two questions in the problem formulations. First, how a set of English writing instructional materials using the
Process-Based Approach for grade VIII students of SMP Institut Indonesia is designed. Second, what the set of English writing instructional materials using
the Process-Based Approach for grade VIII students of SMP Institut Indonesia looks like.
In this study, the writer used Research and Development R D method. R D method consists of ten steps. The writer only employed 5 steps. Those steps
are 1.
Research and Information Collecting, 2.
Planning, 3.
Develop Preliminary Form of Product, 4.
Preliminary Field Testing,
77
5. Main Product Revision.
To answer the first question, the writer adapted Kemp’s and Yalden’s model of instructional design to obtain an appropriate model developed by the writer.
The writer adapted Yalden’s model because it stresses the importance of needs survey. It was used to obtain as much information as possible about the learners’
needs. The other steps were adapted from Kemp’s model of instructional design. The reason why the writer adapted Kemp’s model is that it is a flexible process
model. This means that the writer may start the planning from any step then move back on any step to others. There were six steps implemented in this study,
namely: 1.
Conducting need survey 2.
Specifying goals, topics, and general purposes 3.
Formulating learning objectives 4.
Selecting and organizing contents 5.
Selecting learning activities and resources 6.
Evaluating the materials
There were two surveys conducted in this study. First was survey need survey which aimed to collect as much information as possible about the
learners. It was done by interviewing the English teacher of SMP Institut Indonesia Yogyakarta
and distributing questionnaires to the grade VIII students of SMP Institut Indonesia Yogyakarta. The second survey was done to obtain
feedback on the designed instructional materials from two English teachers of
78
SMP Institut Indonesia Yogyakarta and three English lecturers of English
Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University. The writer distributed questionnaires about the designed materials to the teachers and lecturers.
Based on the respondents’ evaluation on the designed materials, the average point of the central tendency is 3.9 from scale 5. This means that the designed
materials for Grade VIII students of SMP Institut Indonesia Yogyakarta are well designed and acceptable.
The presentation of the designed materials was intended to answer the second question in the problem formulations. The question is what the set of English
writing instructional materials using the Process-Based Approach for grade VIII students of SMP Institut Indonesia looks like. The designed materials consist of
eight units. There are some sections in each unit of the designed materials. They are
1. Let’s start,
2. Study the words,
3. Get focused,
4. Let’s write,
5. Ask for feedback,
6. Get ready to revise,
7. Make Sentences.
79
The time allocation for each unit is 2 x 40 minutes. The complete set of the designed materials can be seen in Appendices.
