a. Students’ Need based on the Interview with the Teacher

For collecting the data, the writer conducted an interview with the English teacher of SMP Institut Indonesia Yogyakarta. Based on the interview, the following information was found: 1. The English ability of grade VIII students of SMP Institut Indonesia Yogyakarta is not the same. Many of them have difficulties in learning English. Only few students can learn the English well. Generally, their English ability is still in low level. They really need more practice. 2. Not only in writing aspect they have difficulties, but also in other aspects like reading, listening, speaking. Most of the difficulties are caused by their lack understanding of vocabularies. 3. There are six contact hours for English subject in a week. From those contact hours, two contact hours is used for writing class. The reason why writing is given more attention is that almost all materials in the first semester of grade VIII of SMP are about kinds of text. They are short functional text, descriptive text, recount text, and narrative text. Besides, it can be an opportunity for students to practice thinking. 4. Some problems which are faced by the students while writing are how to find the idea, how start writing, and how to process. They have also problem with their grammar. 5. To overcome those problems, the teacher sometimes finds activities which encourage them to think. One example is the activity using cards. The cards 54 contain some pictures, words, even sentences which give students idea. By the cards, the students will get the idea easier. 6. To teach writing the teacher uses books and pictures. The pictures are taken from magazines or newspaper. 7. Basically, they like to work both individual and group. They are happy when they are individually given chance to write experience. They like to show their creativity although they still need help in some aspects especially in processing the writing including grammar and vocabularies. 8. According to the teacher, in writing, process is more important than the result. Actually, both of them are important. But sometimes grade VIII students of SMP Institut Indonesia Yogyakarta only think about the result. They do anything even cheating in order to finish their writing. 9. The weakness when a teacher applies writing as a process is that it will spend more time although the students get good understanding in what they are writing. But when the teacher applies writing as a result, the students will not get good understanding even they will cheat to finish their writing. 10. Almost all students like writing although they have difficulties. Sometimes, the teacher uses activity like working in group in order to have a different situation. From sharing, sometimes they can get the idea easier. Although for some students, working in group becomes good opportunity to chat other problems. In other words, they also need guidance while having group discussion. 55 11. Learning writing as process will be more effective rather than result. It helps students to understand well what they have written. But still, the weakness is about time. 12. According to the teacher, the basic principle of KTSP is helping students from unable to do something to be able to do something. Since, this approach helps students especially how to process the writing, it can be concluded that Process- based Writing support the KTSP.
