CHAPTER II LITERATURE REVIEW
A. Literature Review
1. Teaching language for Teenagers
Harmer 2001: 37 claims that teenagers tend to be unmotivated and uncooperative. They are also poor language learners
but he clarifies that all of the comments about young children, teenagers, and adults can only be generalization. It depends on
individual learner differences and motivation. He claims that the crucial thing of this age is that they search for individual identity and
this search provides the key challenge for this group. Anderson in Reymond 2010 gives some tips in teaching
teenagers. He says that all teenagers are interested in pop songs and it will be effective to exploit that interest by bringing music and the
feelings that can be expressed through songs in the classroom. He also says that teenagers like to be seen as cool and up-to-date, so brings in
the topic of current interest of IT, sports, entertainment and media, and English speaking cultures that are personally relevant to young
learners. There are many varieties of materials contained in videos such as music, story, songs, sport, etc. So, the Anderson’ statement
about the tips in teaching teenagers can be found in videos.
Moreover, Brown 2000: 87 - 90 argues that it takes a very special person to be able to teach children effectively. He also gives
some guidelines to make the teaching learning process effective. First is the attention Span. Children are focused on the immediate here and
now, activities should be designed to capture their immediate interest. A lesson needs a variety of activities to keep interest and attention
alive. The next is sensory input. Classroom activities should involve auditory and visual styles. The last is Authentic Language. Children
are focused on what this new language can actually be used for here and now. The teaching using videos allows the teacher to keep
students’ attention for a longer time because it provides audio and visual together and also contains authentic materials appropriate with
the situations and conditions in the surrounding environment. The statements above show us what factors that need to
consider in teaching teenagers. In this research, the researcher chooses to implement his actions in the junior high school level, so he has to
consider the curriculum in that level of education.
