ABSTRACT
MARSAH RAHMAWATI UTAMI. Fractionation of Active Components from
Piper cf. fragile. Benth Essential Oil as Aromatherapy for Antiobesity Using In
Vivo Analysis. Under direction of LATIFAH KOSIM DARUSMAN and
IRMANIDA BATUBARA.
Aromatherapy is one of alternative remedies which used odours from
essential oil. Piper cf. fragile (sirih merah) is one of herb plants that contained
essential oils and had been used as medicinal substances traditionally in
Indonesia. The purposes of this research were to find constituents of sirih merah
essential oil and evaluate their active components as aromatherapy for antiobesity
using in vivo experiment. Fractionation of sirih merah essential oil with silica gel
column chromatography produced 4 fractions. The activity of fraction 1, fractions
2 and crude oil were evaluated by in vivo experiment using male Sprague dawley
rats by aromatheraphy methods and inhalation technique. Forty male Sprague
dawley rats were used and divided into five groups namely ; normal group which
consume normal diet; negative control group which consume high cholesterol

diet without treatment; crude oil, fraction 1, fraction 2 groups were treated with
high cholesterol diet followed by inhalation of crude essential oil, fraction 1 and
fraction 2, respectively. The result concluded that monoterpene (such as sabinene,
mircene, Alpha tuhjene, Alpha terpinene, Gamma terpinene) and sesquiterpene
(such as trans caryophillene and germacrene D) of crude oil and fraction 1 showed
an effect to decrease body weight but alcohol monoterpene (such as linalool and
4-terpineol) of fraction 2 showed the reciprocal effect to the body weight of
Sprague dawley rats. In addition the crude oil group showed the lowest blood
cholesterol and trygliseride level compared to the other groups significantly
